Hooks to Hang Your Marketing On

Posted On: 2008-02-19

What do you do when you sit down at your computer first thing in the morning? I guess that if you're like most adult webmasters around the planet you'll turn ICQ on, check your email, do a quick run through of your stats and then hit the message boards to catch up on what's been happening in the adult online world while you've been sleeping.

After that you'll jump into whatever work you have planned for the day and when you need a break you'll go back through that little cycle of checking your email and your stats and hit those message boards once again. Perhaps you add in a little extra at some point through the day with a dash down to the bank to deposit those checks that keep on rolling in but then it's back to work again.

If that's the way you work each day then that's fine; there's nothing wrong with having a daily routine because it helps you get things done. Without a routine you would run the real risk of working like crazy but not achieving anything so routines are good.

But just have a look at the routine I described above. Does that pretty well describe your daily routine? If it does do you see anything faintly unbalanced about it? Is there perhaps something important missing from that routine?

Here I'm not talking about personal time for you and your family and I'm not talking about time for exercise. There's no doubt that those things are very important but I'm assuming that you have those things factored into your day right now; instead I'm thinking about something else. What I'm thinking about is something that's important not only to keep you in touch with the world but to give you some interesting hooks to hang your marketing message on.

What I'm thinking about is news from around the world!

The Web is the greatest source of news and current affairs that the planet has ever seen and it's right there are your finger tips. So are you taking advantage of it or are you shutting yourself off from the rest of the world and staying totally focused on what's happening here in adult?

Getting so immersed in our industry to the point where we don't really pay a lot of attention to what's going on out there in the world is something that's very easy to do. In fact some of us even make a point of pushing ourselves to ignore all that's happening outside of our own little area of focus because we see it as a waste of time ... and we all know that wasted time is equates to lost money.

But when we lose touch with everything other than our own little area of interest then we lose touch with the people we want to sell our products to. When we lose contact with those people our marketing message becomes stale and we begin talking in the language of last year. At that point our target audience stops listening and when they stop listening to us they stop buying from us and we start losing money.

So spending some time reading the online newspapers and even some of the online marketing websites is not time wasted. It's time very well spent because those sites will show us the things that are important to the people we're trying to sell to.

Sometimes those sites will show us what people are trying to escape from when they come into our world of fantasy. Sometimes those sites will show us what our target audiences are doing in their daily lives and it's those stories, those hooks, that we can use to hang our marketing messages on.

If we use those hooks they will attract our target audience and get them interested in what we're trying to sell. Some of those hooks will be about quite serious happenings and they will be what your target audience will want to escape from. Show them the escape route into the fantasy that you're selling and they will follow.

Sometimes those hooks will be about quite zany things and people will follow them to be entertained or to learn some juicy and salacious tidbit that they can share with their friends. Whether it's serious or just a little crazy, whether it's factual or speculative it's something that contemporary that you can hang your marketing message on and it will make you money.

So step out of your narrow focus and look around you, see what's happening in the world and use it to get your marketing message across.
