TGIF

Yes, it is Friday and I am so glad that it is ... but I'm not sure why I am so happy it's Friday.

I guess it must be a psychological thing because, if we don't get a tropical cyclone descending on us (and that is a distinct possibility), we're off on a big road trip next week and that means getting a lot of work done this weekend.

But then that's life for most adult webmasters. There are no such things as weekends ... it's just another two days when you have to get things done.

Oh well, I guess I'll just suck it up and get on with everything I have to do between now and when we leave and this column is the first thing on my list.

Apple and nasty viruses
I have to laugh at all those Apple fanboys who are still going around claiming that owning an Apple computer means that you don't have to worry about getting any computer viruses.

You should be laughing too because it's simply not true. These days there are a number of computer viruses and Trojans that can infect Apple operating systems and anyone who believes otherwise is definitely off with the fairies.

There is another reason that we should be laughing at all those Apple fanboys. Did you know that the very first computer virus was written to infect Apple machines? It was, it was called Elk Cloner and it appeared about 6 years after the personal computer market began to take off and it was written for Apple machines.

Hoverboard porn? Don't laugh at this one because it's for real. It seems that Brazzers has released some action that features to pornstars having sex while riding hoverboards.

I'm not sure how well something like that will sell but it certainly has some novelty value so you might get a few sales by promoting something like that if you get in early.

As for the featured pornstars ... I wonder how good their aim has to be because evidently there is penetration.

The danger in copying others
Quite often newcomers to this industry are told to do what other successful porn marketers are doing and that's something that many of us still try to do. We see someone who appears to be really successful and is raking in the cash so we set out to copy what they are doing.

It's a strategy that is so full of win isn't it? It's something that can't possibly fail can it? I mean the person we are copying is so successful so we should be too ... shouldn't we?

Well, the chances are that if you set out to copy what someone else is doing the you are going to fail miserably.

For a start the person you are copying may already have a big share of the market so you are going to be left to pick up the crumbs and there's not much money in crumbs.

You might also have an entirely different audience and what you are trying to do may not appeal to that audience. Of course you won't come to realise that until you have invested a considerable amount of time, energy and money into the project.

Sure, you may not be trying to copy everything that successful example is doing. You may understand that you have a different audience and you may have a totally different product and yet you can still make the mistake of copying the work of others.

How many times do you see people advertising “successful” email templates and landing page templates on the web? They offer those templates for a few bucks and you know that they work because the people who are selling them tell you so.

But do they really work with your audience? You might decide that the best way to reach out to potential customers is via the most successful landing page that Lead Pages has to offer and you know that it will be successful because Lead Pages has all the data to show you how successful it was.

But those great numbers are no guarantee that the landing page will work with your audience. Sure, it might have raked in thousands of signups for other people but is that a guarantee that it will work for you.

You might try it and find that you get a dribble of signups ... nothing like the torrent you were expecting ... but you keep on trying because it must work. It worked for others so it must work for you.

Sadly, what works for others may never work for you and you should be prepared for that. Don't blindly copy others. Sure, look at how they do things ... identify the mechanics of how they make money ... but don't blindly follow them.

Now I'm off to dive deeper into today's to-do list. Our departure date is fast approaching and there is so much to do and so little time.
