Are You a Slave to Fear?

Ok so I just managed to totally screw up a WordPress install when I did something stupid with a plugin so, while I upload it all again, perhaps it's time to jump into today's column.

Have you ever listened to some of the mainstream online business podcasts that are out there? I mean the ones that really rank well in iTunes like the daily podcast by John Lee Dumas or the weekly one by Pat Flynn.

If you haven't listened to any of them then I would suggest that you sample a few because there is some great information being shared by the people those two guys interview and some of the tips and suggestions those guys make can be translated into what you're doing here in the adult world.

But one thing you will notice is that it seems as though every one of the people these guys interview are all super positive. It's Rah Rah, life is wonderful, the money is rolling in, I've never been happier, now I get to spend quality time with my family and yada yada yada.

Sometimes I'm left wondering whether some of those people are really telling the whole truth. They might be making a ton of money but is life really that great for them? Are they really happy or are they really just a little bit scared about what the future might hold for them?

Of course they couldn't admit to being scared could they? If they admitted to being scared or even just a little bit broke their story wouldn't be so good would it? People wouldn't listen to them would they?

Well today I downloaded a podcast from John Lee Dumas that first went live a couple of weeks ago and you could tell right from the start that the guy being interviewed was being totally honest because, when he was asked how life was for him, his reply was that he was scared. He had some projects on the go that could be total failures and he didn't know what he would do if they did fail.

He went on to say that he was always scared and that fear was always holding him back. Sure, over the years he had made some decent money with some of his projects but fear had prevented him from doing a lot more and making a lot more and it was only recently that he had come to realise just how strong his fear of failure was and how much that fear was preventing him from really succeeding.

It was really refreshing to hear someone being totally honest about how life was for him and I'm not entirely sure that the interviewer was expecting his guest to be so candid but I am sure that level of honesty really resonated with a lot of people.

I usually listen to those podcasts while doing something repetitive so I have half my brain focused on the podcast the other half focused on whatever it is that I'm doing but as soon as the guy being interviewed told Dumas that he was afraid he had my complete attention.

So how honest are you about where you're at right now? Is fear holding you back from trying something new? Are you afraid to try out that new idea you have because you don't know whether it will really work or not?

If you are afraid to step out and try that new idea then all you are doing is staying right where you are and, if that's the case, then are you really making any money where you are now?

That same guy I had been listening to also suggested that anyone who discovers that something doesn't work for them but still goes on trying the same thing over and over in the hope that one day there will be a better income is just plain crazy.

Try something once, try something twice, but if you're still getting the same poor result then will the result every change? Probably not but fear might hold you there and make you keep on trying and that's both crazy and futile.

So what are you afraid of trying? Are you happy with where you are now or could you be doing a whole lot better if only you could overcome your fear of failure?

Maybe those people who sounded so confident in all those other podcasts may not be entirely up front with how things are for them but at least they're overcoming their fears and are out there making their ideas work for them.

And that's what we should be doing too.
