Beware of Hype and the Word 'Cheap'

Posted On: 2009-06-29

There's nothing quite like starting Monday's column early ... like Thursday night your time ... but I'll be down in the state capital talking to a new client on Monday and I want to have some time off over the weekend so it's now or never!

And of course right now the big news is the death of Michael Jackson. Fortunately by the time you read this the media storm that's currently building should be over and the universe will have returned to normal. Despite the hype, on a global scale, the death of a pop star is no big deal really ... people are still going to be out there doing their online shopping and others are going to be looking at porn just like they do every day.

So don't get carried away with all the hype about what the news of his death has done to the Net. In the grand scheme of things this event isn't even a blip on the radar despite the fact that it managed to bring Wikipedia's database to its knees for a while and Twitter slowed to a crawl while everyone tried to be the first one to tell their friends and followers that Jackson was dead.

The Net as a whole has continued to work just fine so it really hasn't been such an earth shattering event after all.

Sometimes it's the small things that are important
Sometimes it's the small news items that can be the most important. One little news item that XBiz reported on today was really quite significant. The Apple store has accepted its very first porn application for the iPhone and the demand for the application was so great that it crashed the website that provided the upload.

According to XBiz the iPhone application provided around 2,200 images of semi-naked females ... just some topless babes in softcore poses ... but the demand for something as soft as that was so great that the author's servers just couldn't keep up with the demand. Now what does that tell you and why wasn't it you who wrote that application?

There's obviously a demand for porn for iPhones and now all you have to do is find some way of meeting that demand and making money from it.

Less than six months till Christmas
Yep it's definitely less than six months till Christmas and that's some scary news for those of you who sell adult products other than memberships. Only the other day I suggested that you really didn't need to be too concerned just yet about building new pages for the holiday season because you should be able to get them indexed in the search engines in a whole lot less time than in years gone by.

However, the search engines don't buy whatever it is that you might be selling. They're definitely not interested in sex toys and the sight of Matt Cutts in some sexy lingerie just doesn't bear thinking about. It's the surfers ... the customers ... the traffic ... who buy the products we're selling and according to some experts those people are going to be out looking for bargains much earlier this year than they have been in the past.

Those experts seem to think that it's the financial crisis that's going to have people out doing their Christmas shopping early so perhaps it really is time to be building those shopping pages for your toys, lingerie and anything else that someone might like to give as a gift during the holiday season.

Build the pages with the thought that people are looking for bargains and offer them what they're looking for and you may just do quite well through to the end of the year. Now you will note that I said 'bargains' a moment ago and that's quite important.

People may well be looking for items that are cheap but they don't want to buy something that's described as cheap. They're happy to buy bargains, they're happy to pay a discounted price and they certainly are looking for cheap presents but they don't want to see the products described in that way.

While they're looking for things that are cheap that same word that is driving them on will also turn them away if they see it in your sales text. While they want to buy cheap, and so save money, they don't want something that is cheap because cheap gifts don't last ... cheap gifts may not have the same appeal to the recipient as something that costs a lot of money.

Cheap looking gifts make the giver look cheap too and buyers are aware of that and the effect that a cheap gift will have on their relationship with the person they're giving it to. I mean, who wants to try and score with a hot chick by giving her a gift that looks as though it came from the bargain clear-out bin down at your local ultra-cheap nothing-over-a-dollar store?

So don't be in a hurry to use the word 'cheap' in your sales pitch ... it doesn't send the mental picture that you might think it does.
