Blocking Countries and the Number Two Search Engine

Posted On: 2008-10-27

Here in adult we have a product that everyone wants to look at ... well it seems as though almost everyone wants to look at it. And of course we give so much of that product away for free that bandwidth can become quite expensive. So it's only natural to want to do all we can to block the traffic that's never going to earn us a penny of income ... and there's plenty of that around.

One of the best ways of banning traffic that's not going to produce any revenue for you is by blocking IP addresses in htaccess. It's quite effective just so long as you've done the hard work of tracking down those IP numbers ... because there are plenty of them. Not only are there plenty of them but an individual country's IP addresses can be numbered in blocks that aren't even close sequentially.

However an interesting site has now come along that will give you the IP blocks for each country and they'll even set them up so it's a simple copy and paste into your htaccess file. Before I give you the URL let me warn you not to go there unless you have a very robust anti-virus program ... or you're surfing with Firefox and have the No Script plug-in working because there is a very nasty Trojan buried in one of the links pointing away from the site and it will download on you if you access the site I'm about to send you to without taking precautions..

And trust me, your anti-virus program had better be good because a lot of people have hit that site and got no warning at all. That's why I love Kaspersky.

So if you want to use the site to generate a list of the IP addresses for just about every country on the planet then head over to blockacountry.com ... but be warned about that Trojan that's lurking in one of the links off the site.

Once you have those IP addresses for places like China, the Arab countries and even some of the poorer East European countries just drop them into your htaccess script and you'll be able to shut out all those freeloaders that you can't convert into money in your pocket.

The number two search engine
I saw some interesting statistics the other day that now show that the search engine landscape has changed. If you were thinking that the landscape was dominated by the big three ... Google, Yahoo!, Live/MSN ... in that order with Ask and a couple of others struggling along in their dust then I have to tell you that there has been a change.

Yahoo! has moved to the number three spot, MSN/Live has dropped off the list and the number two search engine now is ... YouTube.

Of course you and I may not think of YouTube as a search engine but the people we sell stuff to are starting to search for things on YouTube more often than they search on Yahoo! or MSN/Live.

Now, before you start jumping up and down and telling me that YouTube doesn't take porn movies let me tell you that I understand that but the ban on obviously adult content doesn't mean you can't advertise your adult products over there. All it means is that you have to be creative and if Twistys can get movies and advertising onto YouTube then so can you.

And of course some of you are going to tell me that you don't do movies so you can't get onto YouTube either. Well if can't see how you can get things onto YouTube then I guess I will have to spell it out for you. If all you do are image galleries and sites you can still get those still images onto YouTube. The last two uploads we did to YouTube for mainstream clients were slideshows so think about it ... be creative ... and you too can get listings on the world's second biggest search engine.

Of course, you can pass on that if you want to and let all those surfers miss out on your market message, but if you can get content accepted on YouTube then you can also get it accepted on Google's video site and just about every other video site that's out there. And if you do it right you will get traffic from those sites and you will be able to turn that traffic into money in your pocket.

And now here in Australia it's tax time for small business ... it comes around once every three months for us ... so I'm off to work on our tax. I've already done the income side of it and was surprised to see that these last three months have set another income record for us.

Sure times are bad but if you're prepared to work hard then you can make money and prosper and isn't that why you came into this industry in the first place?
