Reputations – Valid Character Assessment or All Hype?

A good reputation can be the single most valuable thing that any person in the world possesses. In the adult industry and any other business that relies heavily on trust a reputation can either make or break a person’s career. Do we as adult webmasters give credence to factors that should not be considered in evaluating a person’s character or do we judge people based on their accomplishments and make the playing field level?

In order to determine who are the major players in the adult industry all one needs to do is look to the large Webmaster forums. You will see people that have thousands of posts to their names and sometimes these posts come in a relatively short period of time. But, what do any of us know about these people other than their board personas? Do we know how capable they are of conducting legitimate business or are we assessing their characters based on their likeability or lack thereof. There are members of certain boards that have deity like status that have been proven time and again to be shysters. However, because their post count numbers into the tens of thousands they are given special leeway by the masses. People seem to flock to them and revere that what they say is the gospel. There are some people with large post counts that are actually quite knowledgeable and trustworthy but there are more that aren’t.

If you consider for a moment what it takes to be successful in life, business or anything else one of the main criteria would be someone who dedicated themselves to working on their goals. If a person obtains 10,000 posts within a 6-month period it is difficult to imagine when they would have time to work on their goals or business. It would seem that their priorities were a bit out of whack unless their paid position is to frequent and whore webmaster forums. It would hardly seem fair to judge a persons reputation based upon their post count on a forum considering they really should dedicate themselves to furthering their careers or business. This isn’t to say that people with high post counts aren’t good people with good reputations. It’s simply pointing out that this should not be the sole determining factor as to whether someone is a “good ole boy”.

Another way that webmasters often determine whether someone has a good character is just how well they conduct a conversation on ICQ. Time and again you will see someone’s character questioned and others come to their defense by posting that they talk to them all the time on ICQ and they’re cool. The old party animal trait also scores points for character according to some webmasters. It seems the harder a person parties the more trustworthy they are. I don’t know about you but I certainly wouldn’t choose a surgeon that held my life in his hands based on the fact that he could snort two lines of coke off a hookers tits. Why do we settle for judging people based upon their ability to make us feel good about ourselves rather than their accomplishments and their sense of responsibility? It makes the adult industry seem like a playground rather than a multi-billion dollar industry.

It seems that reputations like many other things within the adult industry are built on a whim. If you shake the right hand, blow the right program owner or lick the right nipple you may have a great reputation. If you post like hell on Webmaster forums and treat others with disrespect and disdain you might have a great reputation. If you are serious about succeeding and don’t become indulgent with your lifestyle and concentrate on growing and furthering your business you might very well have no reputation at all. This actually can hinder your progress and it’s a sad reality that those that have done nothing but partied and posted often get greater rewards than those that actually spend their days, nights and weekends trying to learn and better themselves.
