Don't Let Yourself be Distracted

There's a lot to be said for living outside of a major city. The air's cleaner, the people are more friendly, there's not as much traffic on the roads and if you happen to live in a major tourist destination then you get to stay when everyone else goes home.

Those are great reasons to live in a place like we do but when you work online there's a rather major downside to living outside of a capital city. You don't encounter it often but when you do it just makes your day suck and yesterday that downside was around to really make our day suck.

Yesterday we had almost no internet connection. We first noticed it at 4am when the connection kept dropping out every minute or so and from there it just got worse till there were times when the connection would be on for a minute or two and then disappear for an hour or more.

Sadly it's a problem that has been bothering this town for a month or more ... although it has never been as bad as yesterday. It's also likely to go on being a problem because there's an issue at the phone exchange and the phone company that owns the exchange doesn't accept that there is a problem. If they don't accept that they have a problem then there's nothing to fix ... it obviously works for them.

So we'll go on having connection issues and of course when you work online there is nothing more frustrating than continually losing your connection. If you're like us you can get angry and that then becomes a major productivity issue because anger gets in the way of so many other things ... well it does with me ... and then it takes me a while to calm down.

My partner is somewhat different to me though. Oh sure, he does get occasionally get angry when there are preventable connection issues but usually he just shrugs his shoulders and switches to working on something that he can do offline. He just doesn't see any reason to get all bent out of shape over something that he can't change and has no control over.

Right now it seems that I'm not the only one getting a little bent out of shape because I see that there are quite a few people over on YouTube who are getting all bent out of shape over something they can't change either. I understand that YouTube has just begun to allow Google+ comments to appear on YouTube and a lot of people really don't like that.

Evidently there's a lot of huffing and puffing going on but what's the point? All that huffing and puffing isn't going to change a thing ... it's just going to distract people from their work and also distract them from seeing how they could turn those changes to their advantage.

So how do you handle things when there are interruptions to your work or changes are forced on you that might reduce your income? Do you lose the plot and let anger take over? Do you hit the message boards and rant about things that you can't change and have absolutely zero control over?

If you do then you've undoubtedly got a lot of friends who will just love hearing and responding to what you have to say ... but how will that help you, or them, in your quest to make a fortune? How will wasting time on things that are never going to be productive help you in any way?

Why waste time ranting and raving when you can leave all that to your competitors. While they're making all that noise you could using your time much more wisely to look closely at whatever it is that has set them off and discovering how you could be making money while everyone else is wasting their time.

Admittedly looking at ways of making money isn't as much fun as joining in all that ranting and raving is. There's nothing more satisfying than delivering a cleverly constructed rant ... that nobody who can undo those changes that set you off will ever read ... so really ... what's the point?

That seems to be my partner's attitude ... why let petty people and petty nuisances spoil your day ... get you worked up and wound up so tight that you can't focus on what you should be doing? The sun will still rise tomorrow ... the birds will still be singing in the trees ... and there will still be money to be made so why stress over things that you can't control?

Stay focused and go on making money.
