Double Standards in the Adult Industry

I think that everyone in the adult industry has at one time or another gotten swept up into board drama. Someone is calling another person out or a company has screwed a Webmaster over. Rather than look at all aspects of the issue everyone tends to jump on the popular person’s bandwagon and toot their graces, how cool they are, and how much fun they are to party with or just what a great guy or gal it is. Is this because the person is truly a good person and hasn't done wrong or is it because the people standing up for the person is a complete idiot. There seems to be a lot of double standards that happen on a daily basis yet those double standards aren't pointed out by any of the popular personalities. If someone does point them out they are called trolls, ridiculed and harassed and made to feel like they are two inches tall.

Forums are not the only place that you see the idiocy come into play. Industry events always bring out the crazies also. There have been drug overdoses, catfights, man fights, jail, vandalism, public drug use and extreme abuse of alcohol. It's fine for those that do it to enjoy themselves but at the same time what they are doing looks like idiocy to the sober and sane people. It's a bit of a double standard that the cool kids are infallible and the rest of the Webmaster population is total screw-ups. One of the things that really strikes me as odd is the fact that you will see so many webmasters complaining that someone else is stealing their content, designs or other intellectual property but in the same breath those complaining are bragging about downloading illegal software, scripts, music, movies and more. That is another double standard that runs rampant in this industry.

The largest thing that I can see is that "reputation" plays a huge factor in who is an idiot and who is not. You can see an independent Webmaster that's had a little too much to drink and does something he ordinarily would not do and he's crucified and practically run out of the business after the video or pictures surface. However, when the largest names in the industry happen to do stupid stuff they get patted on the back and invited to more parties. It's fine to be the life of the party but at what cost? Do you want to ruin the reputation of your employer, your site or even the entire industry? All webmasters should be judged equally and if one standard is applied to a situation then it should be applied to all situations of the same type.

The best example of double standards would be a company that is found out to be shaving with definitive proof. That company is typically ruined and the webmasters involved are hardly able to show their faces again. But, when it's only suspected that a company is shaving without actually definitive proof everyone will come in and say that all programs shave and it's not that big of a deal. It seems to be a never-ending parade of double standards. Either something is wrong regardless of who it is and how much money they have or it's always ok for them to do it. It can't be both ways. If any adult webmasters believe for one second that a Fortune 500 company would tolerate the actions and behavior that is prevalent with adult webmasters they are sorely mistaken. Not only would the offenders be cast out of the business with a thud but they also would probably face some kind of legal actions be it criminal or civil. As an industry we should come together, have fun, do business and at the same time remember that there are always those that want to put us out of business and not to give them any additional ammunition.
