Einstein and Your Dreams

I saw my partner describe this week as something resembling a train wreck and, for him, it probably was. He has been trying to co-ordinate a house move for a relative with disabilities and ... well ... they do say that moving house is as stressful as having a death in the family.

Fortunately, he wears his hair cut short otherwise I'm sure I would have seen him tearing it out. But that was him; my week has been better and I hope your week has been good too.

Just a few moments ago I was reading a mainstream marketing email and came across this quote from Albert Einstein: “It is a miracle that curiosity survives formal education."

That's a quote that certainly has some application in this business. We might not have any sort of formal education but nearly all of us start off by following the advice of those who have more experience here. We follow what they say, and quite often we follow them without question, because we think that they know what they're talking about.

If we're in luck, then the people we follow do know what they're talking about. They know what is working right now and if we follow it we will make money ... but will what they suggest go on making us money?

Is the way they tell us to do things the only way? Could there be other more effective ways? Will what we are shown go on working forever?

We tend to feel comfortable if we are following what some more experienced web marketer suggests and it is making us money. While we feel comfortable we're not likely to want to go looking for new ways of doing things but that's exactly what we should be doing.

It's great to be making money and it's great to feel comfortable but the world is now in a constant state of disruption. What works well today is not going to work in the same way forever. Other better ways of marketing our product will come along and they will come because someone is experimenting now.

Someone who is in the same comfort zone that you are in wants to try new things and if they work then that person is going to get the jump on you. Before you know it what you are comfortable doing won't work anymore and then you're running to catch up.

So don't be so comfortable that all you can do is watch your income and your market disappear over the hill. Don't be afraid to experiment, to try new ways of marketing the products you want to sell.

Don't be afraid to be curious because there is always more than one way to sell your product and if you don't look for them you won't succeed in this business.

What are your dreams?
Everyone has dreams of what they want to achieve and what they want to do. It's ok to have dreams because without dreams there would be nothing for us to achieve. And it's ok to have BIG dreams too.

In fact, I believe that if you are going to dream then don't waste your dreams on little things. Dream of achieving the big things ... the things that people will say you can't achieve.

Dream those dreams but if you want to achieve them there's a couple of minor things you have to do.

The first thing is to write them down and then stick them up somewhere that you will see them many times every single day. When you put your dreams somewhere you can see them they become much more achievable because they are there in front of you and not just some wisp of smoke wandering around inside your brain.

And while you are writing those dreams down give yourself a deadline. For example, your dream could be to gross a million dollars in five years' time. It is achievable and you have a deadline to work towards.

The second thing you need to do is to start working towards those dreams. Start moving forward. Do something every single day that will take you closer to that goal and review your progress every single night.

Don't be disappointed if you are only taking small steps towards achieving your goal. Anything that you can do to move you forward is getting you closer to your goal and any big achievement is simply the accumulation of lots of small steps.

No one can achieve a big goal instantly. Everyone can achieve their big goals if they keep on taking those small steps and achieving the small goals that will build to become the big goal.

So what step are you taking today?
