Ensuring Your Success

As part of a mainstream project Steve and I are involved in we came up with a few points that you should consider when you're thinking about going into business for yourself. You may not realize that when you want to start working from home marketing adult sites you're actually going into business ... but you are and so here are a few things you need to consider to ensure the success of your business.

Cut up your credit cards
If you can't live on what you are earning and have to resort to credit to survive then you've made the jump to working online fulltime way too soon. Credit cards are a trap that you should avoid at all costs.

Few people ever factor into their budgets the cost of buying money but if you're using a credit card you are buying money every time you make an interest payment. So ditch them, get rid of them and don't use them. If you need to make payments online for images or hosting then use a debit card and avoid the cost of buying money that you don't have.

Keep your cash flowing
No matter what you are doing in online adult make sure that you have a steady income all year round. If you're an affiliate marketer then build up a steady cash flow before you decide to take a holiday.

If you're a provider like I am then balance your work to ensure that you have cash coming in at regular intervals.

Don't fall into the trap of getting a heap of money one month and then nothing the next. That's something that can really hit you if you've taken on a huge job that will take months to complete. If you're in that situation insist on regular payments throughout the life of the job otherwise your cash flow will dry up and you won't survive.

You should also realize that little jobs can be sweet when it comes to maintaining a steady cash flow so don't turn your back on those small jobs and only chase the big ones.

Don't spend on anticipation
This one is just as important as maintaining your cash flow. Never spend money on anything when you don't have the cash in your hand. Now I know that sounds strange but it's something we are all tempted to do.

We have a budget that we're sticking to and then along comes the promise of a big job. Suddenly we can see a big wad of cash in our future and we begin to think of all those things we could spend it on.

Sometimes we're thinking of better equipment or maybe some luxury item that we think we need. When we see that cash on the horizon we begin to think of ways we can juggle the cash we have right now to buy whatever we need until that big payment arrives.

Sure, you might be able to do it once or twice ... perhaps even more often than that ... but one day you'll get caught. The cash on the horizon isn't real until you hold it in your hand and lots of things can go wrong in the time it takes to arrive in your hand.

If the check is late ... or doesn't arrive at all ... and you've already spent the money the little empire you've been building can come tumbling down very quickly. So stick to a budget and only spend what you actually have in your pocket or in your bank account.

Ignore snake oil salesmen
No matter what business you're in you will always come across snake oil salesmen. They'll offer you sure-fire ways of making money that just can't fail ... but invariably do. Perhaps because most of us work from home and don't have the security of a regular pay check we seem to be more susceptible to these people so they prey on us.

Of course some snake oil salesmen are less obvious than others and if you're selling adult site subscriptions then beware of those pay sites that claim to have incredible conversion ratios. Don't be tempted to drop what you're doing and rush off to promote another site because, all too often, all you end up doing is rushing from one site to another and not spending long enough promoting anything that will make you money.

Burn your bridges
Burn your boats and your parachute while you're burning your bridges too. You don't need any of those things if you want to succeed. In fact parachutes, bridges and boats are all hindrances to your success.

If you want to succeed then make sure that the only way you can go is forward. When you have ways to escape you're more tempted to take them if things don't work out and so you won't work towards succeeding with the same effort that you do if there is no escape.

Perhaps you think that the suggestions I've made might sound harsh and even brutal but if you're serious about making a success of your small business then you need to take them.

Small business ... in any industry ... is tough; many start but very very few succeed so I guess it all depends on whether you want to be one of the few that succeed or one of the many that fail.
