The biggest mistake you can make when discussing the gay porn market is calling it a niche. It is anything but a niche. It is an entity of its own with a unique customer base, affiliate base and many niches within.

Many webmasters make the mistake of calling the gay market a niche because they see it as a subcategory of the straight industry. However, this is a huge mistake because the gay market has a life of its own and can live outside the confines of the straight porn world. There are dedicated resources, products and sites all dedicated to one specific thing and that’s any and everything gay. The same cannot be said about the straight market because many of the consumers of straight porn cross over to gay porn and products designed for those living the gay lifestyle. However, few gay porn advocates and consumers are willing to compromise their lifestyles and “accept” something from the straight side of things.

There is a multi million dollar a year industry within the sex industry and it has gay written all over it. However, the webmasters with success in the gay market can testify that the programs and products that are the most successful come from companies who walk the walk. It is easy for a company that has a track record with good straight porn sites to decide they want to enter the gay market but it is very difficult for them to do it convincingly unless they pull in advisors who have successfully conquered the gay market. The gay market is not as popular with webmasters as it should be and has not grown as large as the straight industry simply because people do not understand how to promote the product or believe in the product they are offering. The key problem with straight webmasters grasping the gay market is primarily ignorance. They cannot relate to or understand the market as well as something that they experience on a daily basis. It is difficult for them to tap into the wealth of traffic because they do not know the lingo or the targeted audience. Perhaps a small part of the issue is the embarrassment of making a successful living from gay porn. There isn’t a huge amount of disrespect or intolerance but gay has been a stigma for so long in society that it is hard to shake old habits.

The two most successful Webmaster groups that you will find promoting the gay market are gays and lesbians as well as heterosexual women. Gay men and women have the most understanding and knowledge of the market and heterosexual women have the most tolerance and focus not on the specific act or persons involved but on the ability to generate income. This isn’t saying that straight male webmasters are unable to successfully promote gay material but you are much more apt to find females or those that are gay are the predominant webmasters in this market.

If you are considering promoting the gay market or if you are struggling currently trying to promote the gay market there are things you can do to assist you. The main thing you can do is go to resources that exclusively deal with the gay market. Look to affiliate programs, resource sites and content providers that only do gay. These are the people that know what they are doing and that can aide you in your quest to be successful. Learn everything you can from people who actually are gay. Don’t assume that everything you read on the boards, in the papers or see on television is giving you what you need to know about the gay market. The lingo used, the kind of language or verbiage that’s demeaning or erotic and the type of content that is appealing are just a few of the things that you can learn from the experts. It is very easy to fall into the trap of what a straight person thinks that a gay person wants to see or hear. Everyone has been guilty of it at one time or another. But, the gay market is a huge business that’s growing by leaps and bounds and could use talented webmasters that are willing to learn about the market and approach it with an open mind and enthusiasm. If you are afraid to go to the boards, single a person that you may be familiar with out. You may find that you are able to open up a whole new world of possibilities for yourself and your bank account.
