Generalizations - They Just Suck!

Posted On: 2011-03-14

It's Monday ... the rain is absolutely pouring down and likely to stay that way for most of the day and that means that it's a good day to be getting a heap of work done. That's just as well too because I've got a huge list of things to get through today and some of the things on that list are going to take hours.

So let's jump into today's column and today I want to warn you about generalizations. You'll see a lot of them all over the web and it doesn't really matter whether you're doing mainstream marketing, adult marketing or a combination of both ... they're out there and if you're new to the industry they will lead you astray.

Sure they almost always sound plausible enough ... they're often put out there by webmasters and others who seem to have plenty of experience ... but if you follow them you're likely to waste a lot of time and effort and achieve not much at all.

I saw a really amazing generalization today on a mainstream webmaster board where they were discussing whether or not Google does anymore than use its algorithm to rank sites. The guy who started the discussion was concerned that his linking profile looked far from natural even though he had tried to space things out and that might hurt his search engine rankings.

One webmaster wanted everyone to know that once a website hit the top 10 for any money term it was always going to be reviewed by a human to ensure that it deserved a top 10 ranking. As another webmaster pointed out that's a generalization that has no apparent basis in fact because you don't have to look far to find some spammy results for money terms that would definitely not be there if the results had been reviewed by a human.

If your wondering about generalizations here in adult you don't have to look any further than the one that appears regularly that claims that fat chicks just don't sell. In other words you shouldn't be wasting your time pushing BBW and plumper sites because no one out there likes big girls and no one is going to buy your product.

I really do love that one because I know for a fact that it is just total bullshit. Sure some guys may have problems selling big-girl sites ... they may really suck at selling those sites ... but that doesn't mean for a moment that you're going to have the same experience. And it certainly doesn't mean that the people we sell to don't want to see big girls.

Lots of guys and girls out there make lots of money selling sponsors who have BBW and plumper content because lots of guys like looking at hardcore action featuring big girls.

The fact is that when you're working online there are so many variations of what works and what doesn't that everyone's experience is different. What works for me may work for a hundred other webmasters ... but it may fail miserably for you.

What works for you may be totally opposite to what many other webmasters believe but that doesn't mean that you're wrong. The fact that it is working for you is proof that you're right.

So instead of believing in all those generalizations that you see and read about on good and bad webmaster forums what you should be doing is your own research and your own testing.

If someone makes a blanket statement about the search engines then go and do some research to see if the person who made that statement is right or wrong. Try to prove or disprove the statement by comparing it with the search results for a wide range of search terms and if you've got sites that are ranking well in the search engines then compare those sites with the statement that was made.

If someone makes a blanket statement about what may or may not work with porn surfers or mainstream surfers then do some testing. Build some sites of your own that fit with the statement and then watch to see what happens. Are those sites that you've built working as well as someone claimed they would? Or are they failing miserably and your old sites do better than the test sites.

The one thing you must never do with a generalization is to follow it blindly. As I said earlier, everyone's experience is different and you are more likely to make more money doing what works for you than by running after every generalization that you come across on the Net.

Sure some may work for you but most are full of nothing more substantial than hot air.

And that's it for me today ... the rain is still coming down and I've got the urge to get some work done so I'm off to jump into the pile of stuff that's waiting for me. See you Thursday.
