Google 101

So I see that a large number of search optimisation specialists have their panties in a bunch once again because of things that Google has done this week and now some well-known names are ranting and raving on their blogs and on Twitter and declaring that Google has well and truly reamed their butts ... I hope they enjoyed the experience.

For all those people who are sharing their angst across the Net I have just one question ... so did you really think that Google wouldn't anally screw you when it suited them?

Apparently ... from the way so many people are carrying on ... the answer to that question is in the negative. Apparently all those people who feel that they have been violated thought in the past that Google was wonderful ... kind to small puppies ... and particularly concerned about the welfare of old grannies.

I mean if that's not the way they thought of Google then why are they carrying on as they are now?

But then some people in the online industry seem a little strange ... more than a little gullible ... unwilling to accept the bleeding obvious. They seem to think that Google is still all about doing no evil even though they have been shown time and again that Google is just as evil ... if not more so ... than any other big business out there.

Hell Google has even likened search engine optimisation people to criminals and their beloved Matt Cutts has said as much ... but those fools go on believing that Google is wonderful and they fight with each other to brown-nose Cutts and anyone else they can find who happens to work for Google.

I guess they live in hope that one day Google will smile on them and bless them and send them forth to prosper and multiply ... but those guys shouldn't hold their breathe waiting for that day to come because it's never going to arrive.

Instead Google is finally shedding its sheep's clothing and showing us the true wolf that was hiding in there. Sadly some of us have understood for years that Google has never been about doing good. Sure they can have their fresh-faced little muppets like Matt Cutts and others go out there and sweet-talk anyone who will listen but the truth is that Google is ... and always has been ... in it for the money and they'll screw anyone and everyone to make that money.

So we shouldn't be surprised that Google is going to rip the hearts out of good websites every now and then with another release of Panda and nor should we be surprised ... or even waste our time and effort ranting ... when Google takes away things that it has previously given everyone for free and now reserves them for those who are prepared to pay.

What we should be doing is anticipating what Google will do next because it's fairly obvious that Google now feels that it is in the perfect position to do anything it damn well pleases ... and we all know that what pleases Google is making money any and every way it can.

So obviously Google wants to go on making money and that means that we need to be looking at how Google might do that in the coming months. To help us make some informed guesses on where Google might be heading we also need to look at what has been happening lately and what companies Google has been buying up.

For a start you have to look no further than Google's search box to see what has been happening. I don't know about you but in the last few months ... at least since Panda was unleashed on the entire world ... Google's search results have been total crap.

Of course you shouldn't really expect much else after Panda destroyed so many decent and informative sites. Sure, we saw the end of some crap sites but plenty of genuinely informative sites got slammed at the start and more and more get hammered every time Panda is unleashed.

So the organic search results are crap and ... just hold that thought for a moment while we look at some other things that Google is doing.

In many parts of the world Google is offering free websites to mainstream businesses. Of course those sites are worth exactly what people are paying for them but they're free and what fool can resist something for free?

However the sneaky thing is that those sites aren't meant to rank well ... those sites are just an encouragement to get the businesses that buy them to start buying Adwords advertising as well ... and of course that means more money for Google.

Finally you should take a look at some of Google's recent acquisitions ... at least one of them is a company that specializes in display advertising.

Now add those three things together ... crap organic results ... more people being herded towards paying Google for listings ... and the ability to crank out display advertising ... and what does that say for the future of Google's search results pages?

If you think that Google is your friend and your business plan involves making money from organic listings ... in any vertical ... then you better start looking for some other way to make money because the day is coming when Google won't be showing anything that they aren't paid to show you.
