Paging Doctor Google ... Paging Doctor Google

We live in a crazy world

Would you believe that medical practitioners are now using Google to help them in their diagnosis of difficult medical conditions? Well they very definitely are and research has shown that Google is getting the diagnosis right in around 58 percent of cases.

I'm not sure whether I find that encouraging or absolutely frightening because I've seen some very professional looking medical websites that were nothing more than full page ads for a variety of herbal remedies. Let's just hope that the doctors' aren't having an 'off' day and can tell the difference too.

On the other hand I can understand why doctors are using Google to help them diagnose some more unusual medical conditions and Google can certainly help. For some years now I've been suffering from a rather unusual illness and by using Google I've been able to have a much more constructive dialogue with my doctors as they treat the symptoms.

But all that raises an interesting ethical question that marketers should seriously consider. At what point do we as marketers take a step back in the design and presentation of our sales sites so that they don't look too professional and don't have the air of an authority site?

I suppose some people might not care whether their sites were misleading or not; for them all's fair in love and pursuit of the almighty dollar. But there are others of us who may think that there is a fine line here that we should never cross.

You could easily say that you're sites are never going to rank all that well on Google so it's not a question you need worry about but how do you know you won't rank well? And how do you know that while your site is ranking well someone won't use it to make a diagnosis or as a recommendation for a drug to prescribe?

So what is the answer? What should you do to ensure that a horrible mistake is not made simply because your well-designed sales site looks too professional more like an authority site?

I doubt that there really is an answer for that question and it really is a case where one solution won't fit every instance. Still it really is something that we should consider because even we should have morals and ethics.

I guess it's hard for people outside this industry to realise but many of us here in adult have stronger morals and ethics than most people in mainstream business. That was certainly something I found when I worked as an escort and I would sooner trust most of the people I met in that industry than many I have met since in mainstream.

That's why I was sad to read of the couple behind Wifey's World and the battle they are having with the people in the neighborhood that they want to move into. It seems that everyone around them thinks of them as wild, debauched and definitely not the neighbours anyone would want. Heck we have lived next to the neighbours from hell and believe me, I would take wild and debauched over the neighbours from hell any day!

As so many of us know, in any neighborhood we're the quiet people, the ones who don't make a lot of noise, the ones who don't hold wild parties and the ones most people never see because we're always working so hard.

I look back at all the adult webmasters I've met here in Australia and the majority of them were so quiet that their neighbours hardly knew they existed and would never have associated them with anything to do with the adult industry.

But I guess people outside the industry just wouldn't believe that. After all we seem to have inherited some sort of wild image and people would much prefer a lurid fantasy than the boring truth. You can't gossip and get heated about the boring truth whereas you can really go crazy and make a name for yourself as a defender of morals when you sink your teeth into a lurid fantasy.

And then there are those defenders of morals ... over in America there is the member of Congress who liked to play with the pages. Wasn't he an outspoken opponent of gay marriage and though of as a protector of children?

Here in Australia we woke up yesterday morning to find that a leading politician had his funny little ways with boys too although he went much further than the American politician. It's alleged that our guy was using public funds to procure his pleasure.

It's a crazy world where the good guys are all too often very bad and us bad guys are often the ones who are good. Thank god it's Friday.
