Growing Your Traffic

Posted On: 2010-02-11

How would you like to see a 594 per cent increase in the amount of traffic coming to your websites? Well if you would like to see growth like that then maybe you should buy some advertising space to run during next year's Super Bowl.

Of course I am joking about an adult site advertising during Super Bowl ... well maybe there's a hint of seriousness in there. If you had the money and could put together an ad that would be acceptable it just might work for you.

It certainly worked for Hyundai this year because that 594 per cent increase in traffic was to their Sonata website. I wonder if the site was really built to convert visitors into buying customers.

Sadly that's not such a crazy concern because some of the automotive websites that are around these days are dreadful. It's hard to find the information you might need to help you make a decision about buying a particular car and then all they do is point you to a dealer instead of getting you locked in to the buying cycle right there on the site.

And they do all that with slow loading flash and other gimmicks that tend to let the web developer's skill drown out the message of just what a great buy the car you're looking at really is.

But I'm not here today to automotive website design ... even though there are plenty of examples there of what not to do in almost every car maker's website. Instead I want to talk to you about traffic.

Years ago ... and it was a few years ago now ... I wrote a multi-part piece on website traffic for Porn Resource and as far as I know it's still there ... and still relevant for today so maybe you should look at it. However, if you're new to the industry and impatient to get things happening and don't want to spend an hour or two reading that series then let's at least give you a few abbreviated tips on website traffic and how to get it.

As we all know, but is something that some mainstream business owners find hard to grasp, traffic to your website doesn't just happen. You can't simply build a site, put it online and then sit back and wait for people to start arriving ... you have to go out and attract your visitors.

Link lists and TGPs
Obviously if you're building free sites or galleries you have to start submitting your sites to the people who control a lot of adult website traffic ... the link list and TGP owners. Now that can be an exercise in futility if you haven't bothered to read and comply with the rules that the various link lists and TGPs have regarding sites that they will list.

And let's cut right to the chase here ... the rules are the rules and if you want their traffic then you better stop bitching about the rules and just comply with them. Invariably newbies whine and carry on about the rules ... it's been happening since the first link list appeared ... but if you want their traffic then you comply with the rules or you don't get what you need.

Search Engines
I know that a lot of newbies read the link list and TGP rules and decide that they won't comply because they can get all the traffic they need from the search engines.

If you're new and that's what you're thinking then good luck ... because you're going to need an incredible amount of it. The reality is that you'll die of starvation before you achieve a good spot in the search engines for a free site or a gallery.

But that doesn't mean that you should entirely give up the idea of getting any traffic from the search engines because you can ... but probably not for your free sites and galleries.

Traffic pumps
Instead you need to build your own traffic pumps ... portals ... hubs ... where you list your own sites, and build plenty of pages that will be attractive to the search engines and give surfers some reason to come back often to see what you've added since their last visit. Link your own sites to those portals and toss in some links to free hosted galleries just to give your portal or hub even more content.

And while you're doing that brand your sites, your portals and your hubs so that they are recognizable. Use a simple logo to do that and use your brand to build up trust among surfers because it's a whole lot easier to sell something to someone who trusts you than it is to sell to someone who thinks that you're probably a crook.

Yep that's the abridged version and if it's left you wondering head over to Porn Resource and do a search for 'traffic' or do a search online to see what instructions others might have put on the Web to help you build your own traffic pumps.

But there is one thing I should warn you about and that you should always remember about traffic. It's hard to come by ... it's slow to develop ... but you can lose it in a blink of an eye if you do something stupid.
