Know Your Product

Imagine going into a auto dealer and asking a sales person to show you a certain car only to find that he hasn't got a clue about that particular vehicle.

He can't tell you anything about the fuel consumption, the top speed, what the trip computer will tell you, what colors it comes in, what extras you might be able to add to the basic vehicle and he can only take a guess at what the final price is that you'll have to pay.

Oh sure, he might look really professional, he may dress well, he may speak well, he may treat you as a valued customer and not appear to be a total douche bag but is that enough to get you to buy the vehicle you want?

Meanwhile someone you know has gone to a dealer across town to make enquiries about the exact same vehicle you're interested in. He meets a salesman who may dress a little more casually than the salesman you met and this guy's sales pitch mightn't have quite the same direct 'buy now' message that your sales person hit you with but this other sales person knows his product.

He has an answer for every question about the vehicle that your friend may throw at him. This sales person can speak with authority about the vehicle and tell your friend exactly how it will meet your friend's needs because this salesman has spent a lot of time driving the vehicle. In fact he even bought one for his wife because he knows how good the vehicle really is.

Now who do you think is going to be the first to buy that vehicle? Will it be you who got almost no information about the vehicle from the sales person and only got some generic sales pitch or will it be your friend who had all their questions answered and dealt with a sales person who was obviously enthusiastic about the vehicle because he had driven it?

I'm fairly sure that most people when confronted by a sales person who has no clue about what they're selling will go somewhere else to buy the product and at the same time people who find themselves dealing with a sales person who is genuinely enthusiastic about the product he is selling are more likely to make a purchase.

Of course things don't always work that way ... sometimes the clueless sales person is going to make a sale simply because some people will buy anyway and sometimes the enthusiastic guy who knows all about the product won't make a sale. However, in most cases it's the sales person who knows their product and is enthusiastic about it who will make the sale.

So what does that have to do with selling porn?

Well if you're the porn webmaster equivalent of the clueless sales person I mentioned above then you'll build galleries and free sites and you'll throw in some banners from the sponsor ... maybe a few words of generic text ... and submit it to the world in the hope that someone will buy what you're selling. And that's all you will have on the site because you probably won't have even gone and had a quick look at the front page of the site.

On the other hand, if you're the porn webmaster equivalent of the enthusiastic sales person you will build your free sites and galleries, you will include some banners just to add some extra eye candy and you will include text that shows your surfers that you know that what you're selling is worth buying and that you know what you're talking about.

But why would you want to do that when it's so much easier just to take the clueless sales person option. Why go to all that trouble when you can just churn out stuff for any old sponsor and still get sales?

Haven't you noticed how hard it is to make sales these days? Haven't you looked at your sales figures and seen how small the figure to the right of the dollar sign on your sponsor checks has become?

The traffic might still be there ... you might still be getting lots of hits on your galleries and free sites ... but the traffic isn't turning into as many sales as it once did. Now we've reached the point where you have to work a whole lot harder for every single sale you get.

Lazy webmasters and clueless sales people play the numbers game ... people who want to make money in this industry these days know their product and get enthusiastic about their product because that's what you need to do these days to make sales.
