Look Up and See What's Happening

One of the things that so many adult webmasters do is to become so focused on their work that they miss what is going on around them. We work 12 or more hours a day ... and sometimes only stop to sleep ... and so we miss out on a lot of human interaction that is going on right under our noses.

Seeing how humans interact with each other and with the world around them is something that is really important and we should be taking time to watch all that interaction. If we miss it we, and our marketing techniques, are in danger of becoming two-dimensional.

We forget that we are trying to sell to real human beings who are out there living in the real world and if we are not watching what is going on in the real world then we are probably not connecting with our potential market in ways that are relevant to them.

That's a rather long and involved way of saying that if you're not watching what is going on around you then you're missing out on some very interesting ... and fascinating ... human behaviour that you can use as hooks to sell your products.

Right now in the town where we live we're gearing up for a local government election. While some people may think that local government isn't all that important I have to say that most people get far more passionate about what is going on at their level than they do at State and Federal levels.

You might think that things that are happening at a local level have little relevance to you if you are selling something to people right across the country but it has been my experience that what is important locally is rarely limited to just one town. What happens in your town or neighbourhood is being repeated right across the country.

Right now, here where I live, I'm watching the feelings between two well-known locals slowly turn from dislike for one another into something much greater as one, who is running for local government, challenges the other's monopoly on local social news.

The candidate wants to run her own local social news to spread her "vote for me" message while the other doesn't like the competition because she has been the source of local news on social media for several years. Now, if you are selling adult products, just think of how you could turn that growing scenario into a story that was wrapped around your product?

If you take the time to look at what is going on around you, then you don't have to spend hours trying to think of a hook to hang your marketing on. Out there in the real world those hooks are appearing all the time and all you have to do is look at there now and again and see what is happening.

And it might pay to have look at what is happening out in the real world for other reasons too. Right now there's talk of yet another economic recession similar to what we had in 2008.

That probably couldn't come at a worse time for this industry because our biggest market, the US has just begun to see an increase in the number of people in work and that would inevitably lead to more sales for us. If there is another recession then people are not going to want, or be able, to spend on non-essentials such as porn.

And while we are thinking about people buying our products it might be worth taking a look at what mainstream marketers may be looking at to help them increase sales ... virtual reality.

A virtual shopping experience was demonstrated at the National Retail Federations annual conference earlier this week and many people are wondering if that is going to be the future of online shopping.

At the moment it seems that virtual reality shopping is going to be mainly aimed at buyers who are interested in high-end products but, as with most things like that, they will eventually filter down to cheaper items and lesser mortals like you and me.

However, that's no reason why we can't be experimenting with virtual reality for porn shopping. There is a company in Vancouver that is already experimenting with virtual reality porn and there are at least five other companies that are doing the same so the shift to offering something different is already on.

For jaded porn buyers who have seen it all and have given up buying their porn the ability to be right there in the middle of all the action might be enough to get them reaching for their plastic once more.
