Making the Right Choices

I read a report today that RegisterFly has been issued a formal notice of termination of their Registration Accreditation Agreement and that's potentially very bad news for anyone who has domain names registered with RegisterFly. Evidently ICANN has had enough of their dubious dealings and has received so many complaints that they're going to put RegisterFly out of the domain name business.

Along with that notification ICANN has called on RegisterFly to act in the interest of the people who have domain names registered with them and allow transfer of those domain names to other registrars. It will be interesting to see whether RegisterFly actually comply with that request. At the moment it seems that RegisterFly has locked all domain names that are registered with it and many people are experiencing a lot of difficulty as they try to transfer their domain names to other registrars.

Of course if RegisterFly does not comply with the request ICANN can take action to override them but things could get very messy if that is what has to happen. In the meantime all those people who have domain names registered with RegisterFly must be holding their breath and keeping their fingers crossed.

Many of these people stand to lose a hell of a lot of money if they lose control of their domain names. It's quite conceivable that some could even go out of business because their domain name is at the very core of their business. It's sad that the ultimate fate of a person's business could rest on some choices that they have made over the years but that's life.

For those people choosing RegisterFly to register their domain names was obviously a very bad choice. It's easy to say that with hindsight but at the time many people began using RegisterFly it was not such a bad choice at all. In fact it could easily be said that using a cheaper domain name registrar was quite a wise choice.

Even now, choosing a domain name registrar who offers cheap registrations can be seen as a good choice. There are certainly plenty around who are not in the same position as RegisterFly and they continue to deliver a good service. And who is to say that just because you register your domain with registrar who charges full price they will be any safer than those domains that are registered with RegisterFly?

Obviously there are no guarantees in this situation and just as obviously a good choice made today may turn into a very bad choice next week. So how do you ensure that you go on making good choices?

Well, I guess it comes down to recognizing that some very important choices are set in stone as soon as you make them. Those choices are set in stone because, once you make the choice, you can't reverse it.

For example if you choose to break the law the chances are that you will be caught and you will be punished. The consequences of making that choice can't be changed after you have made your decision.

But there are other choices that are not set in concrete; or may have some lead time before they become irreversible. The choice of domain name registrar is one of those choices that aren't set in concrete. Anyone who uses a domain name registrar has the option to move their domain names to another registrar at just about any time.

If you first registered a domain with RegisterFly you could have chosen to move it at any time and you probably should have chosen to move it when the bad reports about that registrar began to surface. You could have even chosen to move them after the occasional bad report turned into a continual stream of bad reports. Choosing not to move them at that time may well have sealed your fate.

So there are some choices you make that should be under constant review and if you want to succeed in business then you should keep on reviewing those choices that you have made. Those people who go on reviewing the choices they have made are the ones who aren't caught as so many people have been caught by RegisterFly.

Those people who go on reviewing the choices they have made are the ones that stay ahead of the game and if that's where you want to be then you have to spend time reviewing your choices. Of course, you're not going to go back over every choice you have ever made every single day.

Instead you go on collecting relevant information about your business and you will begin to automatically review the choices you have made in the light of the information that you are collecting. You will begin to hear warning bells about those choices that may turn bad. You will go on hearing good things about those choices that don't need to be reviewed.

When that begins to happen you will begin to think more about those choices that need to be reviewed and then you will be faced with another choice. Do you choose to do something about whatever it is that could turn pear-shaped or do you choose to do nothing about it?

That's when you really need to make the right choices and you need to remember that deciding not to decide really is making a choice ... and it's usually the wrong choice.
