Mobile Money

With all the hype that came and went with the release of the iPhone it's quite possible that the industry may see a surge in the search for adult products that are suitable for use with handheld devices. And just in case you're wondering about my choice of the word 'surge' let me assure you that there has been interest in porn for handhelds for some years now.

In fact I first registered a couple of PDA related domain names as far back as 2000 - 2001. Even though we didn't actually have a PDA at that stage it seemed as though there could be a lot of interest in adult products and there certainly was some even in the early days. We even provided a PDA version of parts of my paysite for a while and that led to some interesting moments.

At that stage we had a contact who worked in a computer store and the only way we could see how my site looked on a PDA was to take some of the content into the store on a flash card and give ourselves a demo. I'm not sure what our contact thought but he did let us have a little play with it to see how the site rendered.

Since then there are have been several sites that claimed that they could give you a simulation of what a web page looked like on a handheld device and there was even a download that was supposed to do the same thing. I don't know what luck others had with those sites and the download but we could never get them to work.

Over time we stopped thinking about how our sites might render in a handheld device but now we're building mainstream sites in a tourist town we're beginning to pay more attention. We're also paying more attention because handheld devices with direct connection to the Net have been becoming more popular and even I have one now.

Now that we can see what ordinary sites look like on mobile phones we're really beginning to shudder. To see what I mean wander over to operamini.com/beta/simulator and have a little play with some of your favorite websites.

Of course the text is going to be a bit larger than what you will see on that simulator but the way the site is laid out on the screen will be about the way it appears. Did you find it a bit scary?

If you took the time to look at some of your sites and you want those sites to be available to all Net users ... even those who use mobile phones and PDAs to browse the Web ... then you probably weren't particularly happy about the way the sites appeared in the simulator.

There is a way to overcome that of course and all it requires is some CSS to allow the mobile browser to pick up the mobile version of the site and you do have a mobile version of the site don't you?

And if you're thinking that there aren't any sponsors offering mobile versions of their sites then have a look around. You'll be surprised how many sponsors there are out there that have something for mobile browsers. Even if you can't find one for the niches you like to promote then don't be discouraged ... all you have to do is start your own paysite featuring mobile content.

By the way I'm not joking when I say that. People are now able to buy goods using their mobile phones so starting up your own paysite and offering great content to mobile users is not out of the question.

In a Sphinn
One major problem for adult webmasters is the lack of good reliable sources of information about search engines. Sure, you'll find a lot of boards out there that are either dedicated to topics relating to search engines or have a section set aside for search engine topics but the quality of those boards is just a little questionable and some are a complete waste of time.

There are also lots of blogs out there written by search engine optimisation experts ... but unfortunately most of those are written by people who are legends in their own lunch box rather than true experts. The few that are good are well worth finding and I'm not about to give you any clues on which are the best but what I will give you is the URL of the search engine optimisation equivalent of Digg.

In case you didn't know you won't see much about SEO on Digg because most diggers have a totally illogical dislike of people who come from an SEO background. So some SEOs decided to go out and create the SEO equivalent of Digg and you'll find it at sphinn.com.

Sphinn is in its infancy but it is already full of some great links to search engine optimisation articles and it's something you should bookmark and go back to every day. You will find some valuable nuggets of information there and you won't be wasting your time at all.

And that's it for today. Tourist season is starting to pick up here and I'm off to talk touristy things with a couple of clients who have asked us to provide something very different. I still get blown away when I think about all the different skills we have developed simply because we learned how to market effectively on the Web.
