Money Sex and Firefox Add-ons

Wow today, where I live, they're forecasting temps to range up to the low 70s. I guess that means that winter is just about over here which isn't much of a surprise. We really only get a few weeks of what we might call cold weather before we drift back into the warm days you get in sub-tropical Queensland.

Money
While just about any part of Australia is a great place to live it's not so great if you're earning your income in United States dollars and people in other parts of the world are finding the same thing. For us that means that every time the US dollar falls we take a pay cut and there comes a point where you have to start putting your prices up to recoup some of the losses. For Webmasters in the United States that means that a lot of cheap services that they sourced offshore are going to start costing more.

That's the sad side to outsourcing. It's been done by so many different industries in the United States because it was a way of saving money but now it's going to start costing businesses money. Of course some companies will be able to bring those services that they outsourced back onshore but for others the talent pool in the United States that they were using is evaporated and they'll be stuck paying extra offshore for some time to come.

Would you like porn with your pizza?
Well we all knew that sex sells and there are many products out there that rely on sex in their advertising to sell their product but now one guy has really switched on to the idea that sex sells. He's using it to sell pizzas in Winnipeg and the sex bit isn't just appearing in his advertising.

Porno Pizza is offering everything from softcore to full-on hardcore with every pizza they sell. The images are printed inside the box and only appear as you eat the pizza and it's really working. Business is described as 'brisk' and the pizza shop owner is already in talks with potential partners with a view to opening up franchises across Canada.

As the pizza shop owner admits, it's an interesting twist on the classic story line of the pizza delivery man who gets paid in pussy.

Hmm - I wonder if every pizza box comes with a 2257 statement?

Firefox add-ons
Sometimes I feel really envious when I look at what Steve can do with Firefox. I know I could easily ditch Internet Explorer and move over to Firefox but somehow I just can't bring myself to make the switch even though Firefox has so many really great add-ons that really make it sing.

Steve found two more yesterday that I really should tell you about. The first will really help you if you use multiple computers and the second is great for web development.

If you're like us you may find yourself using several different computers each day. On the days I'm working from my desk down at our shop front location I'll use three computers. There's the one in my office at home, the one down at the store and then my laptop that I sometimes work on after dinner and so I have three different sets of bookmarks. Almost without fail the bookmark I want right now is on one of the other two.

Steve has a similar pattern of computer use but now, thanks to Foxmark, he has his bookmarks synchronized across all three of his computers. You can pick up the add-on at the Mozilla site and it took Steve all of five minutes to install it on all three computers. An added benefit is that now his bookmarks are also stored online so if something happens to any or all of his computers he can simply recover them all by downloading them from the site.

The other add-on Steve grabbed yesterday was one called Firebug and you can get it from getfirebug.com. Firebug allows you to edit, debug and monitor CSS, HTML and JavaScript live in any web page. It can open in a separate window or sit in a bar at the bottom of your browser. Steve hasn't had any spare time yet to play with it so I can't tell you how good it might be but I'm sure he'll find time soon.

Firebug has some good news for those of us who don't use Firefox. Firebug Lite offers IE, Opera and Safari users some of the features that Firefox users can enjoy so we're not totally forgotten.

And now I'm off to play with my new toys. It was my birthday yesterday and now there are two shiny new 22 inch widescreen monitors sitting on my desk just begging me to use them for some work.
