Nothing Here is Set in Concrete

Right now my small business is going through a period of evolution. It's evolving from what it is now and what it has been in the past into something quite different. Evolving your business ... changing it's focus is never easy ... there's almost always some pain but evolving is nothing new.

Any small business that wants to make money in this industry ... or over in mainstream has to continue to evolve too because the people we're selling to are moving on and we have to move with them.

So, if you've been in this industry for a few years now what is your small business doing to evolve? Are you still doing things the way you always did them? Are you working on the basis that if something worked and made money for you when you first started in this business then all you have to do is go on doing the same thing in the same way and the money will keep on rolling in?

If you're new to the industry do you think that all you have to do to make bucket loads of cash is to learn the basics and then go on repeating those basics over and over again?

Well if either of those scenarios fit you then I have to tell you that you're doomed to fail. Maybe not right now but not far down the track your time will come.

If you've been in this industry for a while now and your business isn't evolving then you're either being left behind or your going to be left behind and your income has probably already begun to shrink.

If you're new to the industry and you think all you have to do is learn the basics and you'll be set for life then I've got to tell you that everything changes over time. Even some of the basics of making money here have changed and will go on changing in the months and years ahead.

And if you don't believe me just check out some of the adult webmaster boards. Right now there are a couple of stories floating around of adult webmasters who used to make a pile of money selling porn but over the last year or so their income levels have sunk to the point where they have had to go back to working a day job ... and they're finding it very hard.

One or two of them still don't seem to understand why their income levels dropped to the point where they've had to go back to working for someone else and that's sad. It's especially sad when the reasons for their failure are so obvious ... the world has moved on ... the people they sold to have moved on ... things are not the same as they once were and if you don't keep pace with the market place then you stop making money.

This is an industry where nothing is set in concrete. Sure that's the way it might look and there are times when that's the way it all feels but nothing could be further from the truth. And not only are things always changing in this industry but the pace of change is increasing.

Way back at the beginning all you had to do to make money was to throw up a site with a few banners and a softcore image or two. That was an easy way to make money and it lasted for a few years.

Then came free sites and galleries and that method of making money lasted for a few years too but it faded and whatever took it's place is beginning to fade too. So if you've been here for a few years or you're new to the industry you have to start looking for new ways of marketing your products ... new ways of making a buck ... and you have to start looking for them now.

If you leave it till your income levels start to drop to look for a new and more effective way of making money then you've probably left it too late. By the time you adapt your business to whatever is currently working the market place will be ready to move on and that will be the start of a vicious cycle.

You'll catch up just in time to see the people you want to sell to move on to something else and it will go on like that till you too will fall by the wayside.

So don't sit back and ever think that you've arrived and all you have to do is relax and just go on doing the same thing tomorrow that you did today and yesterday and the money will go on flowing through the door in a torrent ... because it won't.

The moment you fool yourself into believing that you and your business can stop evolving is the moment you and your business start to fail. And we all know where failure is going to take us.

So don't ever think that things are set in concrete here ... don't ever think that you and your business can stop evolving and don't ever accept failure as an option.
