Opportunities or Pains in the Ass?

So there I was, with my partner, enjoying an early morning coffee down on the beach and watching another stunning sunrise this morning when one of our clients wandered up and they brought along another local business person.

Of course, we can't help ourselves. Surrounded by all that natural beauty ... and sipping on a great cup of coffee ... we just had to start talking about business. Our client is pretty switched on and they aren't afraid of tackling new things but, sadly, the same thing can't be said for the person who was walking with them.

Steve had taken a photo of the sunrise and put it up on Snapchat and when he mentioned it to our client they were interested to learn more but all the other business person could do was grumble.

"Not more mumbo jumbo to learn? God why do we have to keep getting all this new stuff all the time." And all this was coming from the mouth of someone who works in an industry where social media plays in important role in marketing their product.

That's rather sad but, if you've read my column this week over at Porn Resource you would know that this person's attitude is about par for the course in the town where we live. If it requires work, if it requires some lateral thinking, if it requires some extra effort, then most local businesses just aren't interested.

They think that they can just go on doing the same old thing year after year and still make money. They don't seem to be able to grasp why they're not making money anymore and why so many of the customers they once had are now doing business with others.

Those are people over in mainstream but they sound and behave a lot like quite a few adult webmasters who aren't prepared to think laterally, make an effort to try new things or even take the time to keep up with the changes that are happening in the marketing landscape.

There are so many social media options available to us to reach out to the people who would buy our product and yet we don't make use of them. If you are an Internet Amateur then why are you not using Snaptchat? Why are you not providing content on that platform that will pull people across to your website?

And even if you are not an Internet Amateur there is no reason why you can't use Snapchat to market your products. Think outside that proverbial box ... think about who you might become so that you can market to people who visit your sales sites.

Everything you post on Snapchat is gone in 24 hours so you don't need to have a ton of content to keep people happy on that platform.

Over on Porn Resource I talked about YouTube. You may not realise it but YouTube has lots of adult content ... you can even do a search for 'pornstars' and YouTube will show you a ton of stuff and people are looking at it. When I was researching the Porn Resource column I followed a few links over there on YouTube and found that the number of views listed was over 7 million for just one clip.

And that clip had no bare tits or ass in it at all. When was the last time any one of your traffic sources sent you over 7 million hits for just one piece of softcore content and didn't charge you a cent for it?

Then there is Instagram ... again all you need is softcore content. some research into what hashtags work there and suddenly you are reaching out to an audience that you may never have had contact with before. How hard is it to watermark a bunch of photos with your URL at the beginning of the month and then post them once or twice a day?

The only cost to you of posting on Instagram is the cost of the time it takes you to prepare the images and do the research so you know which hashtags to use.

Pinterest is another place you should be thinking about. Do a search for 'babes', 'sexy babes' or even 'babes in thongs' and you will see that there is a lot of potential traffic to be picked up on Pinterest.

It's time to stop grumbling about every new form of social media that comes along. It's time to start realising that every one of those new forms of social media is yet another exciting opportunity to market your products.

Start thinking of all those social media platforms as opportunities and not as pains in the ass and you will grow your business. Grumble and complain and ignore them and you will be heading for the exit before you know it.
