Prospering and Surviving in Adult Online Marketing

Posted On: 2007-11-29

There's no doubt that if any industry has a revolving door syndrome then it's this one. Lots of people come rushing in because they think that this industry is all about easy money and most of them don't last more than a few months. Some don't even last long enough to build their second free site or gallery.

Sadly the lure of easy money isn't supported by the reality and even when you do begin to make money here it takes quite a while for the amount you make to build into something that you can actually survive on. Faced with that sort of return many of those who do survive longer than their first free site or gallery don't last more than a few months and after 12 months the retention rate is very small indeed.

So today I thought I would give a few tips on how to survive to those who are just starting out.

Don't quit your day job
Even though that's the exact reason that so many people come into this industry quitting your day job is about the last thing you should do. Don't quit your day job for at least 12 months and perhaps even as much as two years or more after starting here.

In fact don't even set a timetable for quitting your job based on nothing more than elapsed time. The time to quit your day job is the point where your income from adult marketing exceeds your income from your day job and has done so for at least 6 months.

Don't expect to make money ...
... for months. Very few people in this industry ever make money from their first site or gallery and most don't make anything from their second, third, fourth or even fifth free site or gallery either.

It takes time to come to grips with the dynamics of selling adult products online and very few people ever make a sale from their first efforts. Now I'm not trying to discourage you here but I do want to encourage you to have some realistic expectations.

Understand that making money in this industry takes time and you will survive. If you expect to make money instantly then the revolving door will soon grab you and spit your out into the real world.

Understand that the job is repetitive
If you can't stay focused on the one thing for more than thirty seconds then this industry is definitely not for you. You need to understand that this job is repetitive and if you want to succeed then you will concentrate on repeating, over and over again, whatever it is that starts making you money.

If you flit from one thing to another ... just like a butterfly ... then you'll never stay long enough on one thing to make money and that revolving door will be slapping your ass as it kicks you back to the real world in no time at all.

But don't be afraid to try new things
Now I've just said that when you find whatever it might be that makes you money in this industry you should do it over and over and over again ... and so you should. But while you're repeating whatever it is that makes you money you must take care not to stagnate.

Keep on working at making money but also be prepared to experiment a little; be prepared to grow and develop more skills and see if they can be used to make even more money.

Never forget that this is a real business
Too many people come into this industry with the fanciful idea that it's somehow detached from reality and the principles that govern businesses out in the real world simply don't apply here. If that's what you think then watch out for that door because it's going to swallow you whole.

Every business principle that ensures a successful business out in the real world applies here and if you ignore those principles then you WILL fail. It's not a case of 'maybe' or 'might' - it's a case of you WILL fail if you don't build your business on sound principles.

Keep good records, pay your taxes, watch the rise and fall of your income and forever be looking at ways to reduce your expenditure and increase your profits.

Prepare for the worst
You may feel bulletproof right now but what will happen if you become ill and can't work for a while? Maintain things like medical insurance and put money aside for a rainy day. Have a plan in place that someone else in your family can follow to maintain your business if you become so ill that you can't do the job yourself.

And that's just a few of the things that you need to be thinking about if you want to succeed in this business. There are many more things that you need to watch and take care of if you want to survive so don't stop with just the things that I've talked about here; do some research on surviving in business and apply what you learn.

When you do all those things then you just might be come one of the real survivors in this industry and still be around ten years from now.
