Putting it in Perspective

Posted On: 2010-07-08

Why do you do what you do? If you're an adult webmaster and doing affiliate marketing ... building free sites and galleries ... why do you work such long hours?

Is it because of all the money you make? Is it because you can work from home and not have to answer to anyone but yourself? Is it because it gives you the opportunity to look at porn all day?

Sometimes ... no matter what you do for a living ... it's good to question why you're doing what you do. It helps you to put things in perspective ... it helps you to decide whether or not it's worthwhile going on doing what you do or whether or not it's time for a change.

It's all too easy to get so bogged down in the everyday things that we don't take time to look up and see what's happening around us ... see what's happening to us ... and see what's in the future.

Sometimes it's a bit like driving down the highway and becoming so engrossed in the map that we're using to guide us to where we want to go that we stop looking at the road, don't notice that we've drifted into the oncoming traffic and we're about to collide head on with a massive rig that's going the other way.

And when we do look up it's all too late.

So today it's time for you to stop what you're doing and take a look around. It's time to see where you're heading and begin to think about whether or not that's really where you want to go.

It's time to think about what you're doing and whether or not you can work smarter rather than harder. It's time to stop and think about what your income level is and compare that with the amount of time you're spending earning that income.

A little while ago a potential mainstream client came to me and told me that he had a lot of work for us to do ... and there definitely was a lot of work involved in the project this guy wanted us to work on. However his view was that having a lot of work for us to do meant that we should give him a huge discount.

But his idea of a good price was way beyond what I considered reasonable. I won't tell you what the hourly rate is for my business but it was definitely nothing like the $20.00 an hour he wanted to pay. Sure ... even the amount he had to pay at that rate was substantial but it was never going to be enough to cover the amount of time it would take for my staff to get the job done.

If you're going spend $80,000 worth of hours completing a big project a payment of $50,000 is never going to be enough. So what is your hourly rate worth and are you making at least that hourly rate from your affiliate marketing?

Of course there are some offsets that you can take into account when you're considering the amount of time you spend working to earn the income that you're currently making. In this industry if you're doing the fulltime webmaster thing then you are your own boss ... you don't have to fight the peak hour traffic ... and you can work the hours that suit you. That's got to be worth something but only you will know just how much it is worth if your income level is below what you might otherwise be happy with.

And while you're thinking about that is there some new direction that you can take that may increase your income so that it at least matches the amount of time you're spending on work? You also need to be asking yourself whether or not factors beyond your control are making it harder to survive here ... or survive in any business you might be in.

The world has always been changing ... many believe that change comes in cycles ... but those changes and cycles are coming more frequently than they did in the past. The way we're doing business right now is going to change ... there's simply no doubt that will happen ... so if you want to survive those changes you need to know what those changes will bring.

Those who survive the changes are always those who are proactive rather than those who are reactive and the proactive ones are those who take the time to look ahead and prepare for those changes.

So today is a good day to stop and take some time to put your life ... and your endeavors in perspective. It's a good day to see where you are ... where you want to go ... and what you're going to have to do to reach those goals as the world around you changes.
