Search Engine Oddities and Other Things

In today's wired world it's quite easy to see that the markets that we might be interested in are sometimes hot and sometimes cold. What's hot today in America might be absolutely stone cold in a few months time as all that heat moves to another part of the world.

Take Viagra for example. There's no doubt that it was very hot property in America for quite some time but these days it's obvious that the market is over-saturated and it's harder to make money selling Viagra or its derivatives in America. However, if you were paying attention to Google Trends you might have noticed that Viagra is very hot in Italy right now.

Just think of all those poor Italian studs who can't get it up anymore ... they're out there searching Google for the one thing that can restore their manhood and make them feel good again so if you promote Viagra online why are you still here? Why aren't you out there looking for someone to translate your pages into Italian?

While you're at it perhaps you should be getting those pages translated into German too because German is another country where people are spending a lot of time on Google searching for Viagra. But in your mad rush to grab your share of the Italian and German Viagra market don't tear down your English Viagra sites because, according to CNet News, Viagra is also hot in the United Kingdom right now.

If you're working the gay market don't feel too smug as you watching the Viagra sellers rushing off to find translators because you guys should be out looking for translators too. You see, the country where most searches are done for the term 'gay' right now is in Chile and that term is hot in several other countries in South America too.

Australians are searching for love so if you're still promoting dating sites ... even after all the bad press about Zango ... then start learning how to talk Strine and she'll be right mate.

Personally, if I was you, I'd go a bit soft on promoting the word 'sex' though It seems that that's the hot search word in India and several Muslim countries so you might get a lot of hits but not many sales.

Typos
There are a lot of people out there ... and not only in the adult marketing industry ... that like to play with typos for domain names. In fact some typos can be worth a large amount of money but perhaps those days are coming to an end.

Aaron Wall reports that it looks as though Google is beginning to correct what it thinks are domain name typos. It may be something that's not fully implemented yet because it doesn't seem work with some of the big domain names out there but that may only be a matter of time.

If Google really is working to cut out typos from its results then perhaps now might be the time to unload your typo domain names before their value becomes a lot less than they are right now.

Speaking of selling domain names
I see that The Generations Network - a company that owns a number of domain names that are related to genealogy and family history - has just sold off a large stake in its business to a private equity firm for $300 million.

It seems that there's a lot of money in family histories so if you've got a domain name salted away that has some relevance to families and their history now might be the time to bring it out, dust it off, and start building a site around it. In a few years time it could be worth a great deal more than your favorite porn domain name.

Looking for a cheap programmer?
For a few years now if you wanted a cheap and reliable programmer for any of your projects the place to look was India. Outsourcing to that country was a sure-fire way of getting exactly what you wanted at a very cheap price.

A year or so ago I read of one US based programmer who outsourced all of his work to India and only acted as a front-man for his clients and it sure worked for him. But those days might be coming to a close. It seems that Indian IT workers are now beginning to realize just how much they're really worth and now they want a bigger slice of the pie.

Obviously that's now going to cause problems for some of Webmasters as they either face up to reality or once again go on the hunt for some cheap labor.
