Server Meltdown and Holiday Season Marketing

Posted On: 2007-10-31

So you think your server is getting a lot of traffic? Perhaps you think you're getting right up there with The Hun as far as incoming traffic is concerned? Well now I think there's another server out there that's doing a whole lot better for traffic than you and The Hun combined. Unfortunately it just couldn't cope with the load.

The second round of ticket sales for the Beijing Olympics went on sale online yesterday and their server couldn't cope with the demand ... but then what server could possibly cope with 200,000 hits every second? And just in case you think you might have misread that figure let me tell you again that what the server was getting was 200,000 hits every second.

And these ticket sales were only for people living in China.

When you think about it that's a rather awesome statistic. Not only was the site getting so many hits but it was getting them all from the one country. Just imagine what your bottom line would look like if you could sell a product to just 10% of those people who were trying to buy Olympic tickets.

Years ago Steve suggested to someone here in Australia that China would one day be the market that people would really want to sell into and he was laughed at. Oh well people aren't laughing about the potential for making money in China these days. If you can overcome the billing problems China is definitely the market you should be targeting if you have a mainstream product to sell.

Speaking of selling products, a client approached us yesterday and, looking like a naughty little schoolboy, told us that he had a container of sex toys to sell. He wondered if we might be able to help him market them and of course we're more than happy to assist him. I'm sure that some first-hand product reviews are going to be needed to help get sales happening.

Actually it will be an interesting exercise for us because we will be marketing adult products outside of the adult online area. That seems to be a rather unusual situation when you think about it and I'm sure it's going to be a situation where we will have to tread carefully to make sure we don't make the advertising too hot for mainstream to handle.

But then just what is too hot? I'm sure you'll hear me talk more about it as we move ahead with this project.

In case you haven't noticed it we now have less than a month to Christmas so if you were thinking of getting a new site online to take advantage of those Christmas shoppers then you're probably way too late. If you have an established site out there then perhaps you do still have some time to tap into those Christmas sales.

Even if you only have adult sites online you can still take advantage of Christmas and sex toys and lingerie are worth thinking about. You'll find that there are merchants who sell those products out there who are willing to deal with the adult online industry so track them down and see what they offer.

If you are thinking about marketing those products then I wouldn't waste anymore time just thinking about it. Instead we're now getting to the time when action is needed so start doing your homework today and then start getting the advertising up there on your sites.

The Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday period is a time when people begin to discover just how lonely they really are; it can be a terrible time for them. It can also be a good time for us to promote genuine dating sites that really can help lonely people find real friendship and support.

So think about adding some marketing for dating sponsors to your sites over this period. If you really want to make sales in this area then I would suggest that your marketing should be a bit more than just throwing up a banner or two ... and definitely avoid the geo-targeted banners that some sponsors have. Those banners might work in some areas but geo-targeting is definitely not as accurate as you might think.

Instead of banners think about using some marketing text that speaks directly to the lonely person who is looking at your site. Think in terms of a headline that would grab their attention and some text that shows them the benefits that they might get if they visit your sponsor ... and don't forget a call to action that encourages them to have a look at your sponsor.

Of course that's all a bit involved isn't it? It's so easy just to throw up a banner and hope for the best but if you're serious about making sales then you have to get serious about marketing because when you do that you're going to start making real money.
