Shock!! Horror!!

Well not really for us but I bet that's what the moral minority are going to be thinking when they read a new book that's just been released here in Australia. There's nothing terribly salacious about the book and I doubt that there are any hardcore sex scenes displayed in the book ... and the 'f' and 'c' words probably don't appear in it either ... but some people are not going to like it.

In fact all the book really contains are the results of a three year study conducted by three Australian researchers into porn in Australia but the results of that study are not going to be happy reading for those who portray porn as dirty, evil and degrading to women. In fact just about all the stereotypes that the moral minority likes to use when talking about porn are pretty much destroyed by the results of the study.

You see, according to the study, porn is not something that only perverts and lonely old men spend time looking at ... in fact they never have been the only ones who have used pornography. The study actually revealed that most porn users were just average people under the age of 35 and a significant proportion of them were women.

Not only was that proportion significant but it is steadily growing as more and more women admit to the fact that they enjoy porn just as much as the guys do and the women don't find it degrading at all. Now perhaps you can see why the moral minority aren't going to be very happy with the truth.

While I'm quite happy to use a study like this to take a swipe at those who think that pornography is dirty and degrading there's also another message for those of us who are engaged in the online adult industry. Think about it for a moment and you'll see that there is a growing market out there for us that so few people are tapping into.

Sure there have been porn for women sites around for quite a few years now but if you read the results of the study you may find that there's no real need for a whole separate niche for women. At the same time you may also find that many of today's porn sites are not as appealing to women as they could be.

Now that might sound like a complete contradiction but it isn't. If you have a look at some of the porn for women sites you'll find that they include a lot of galleries of hunky men as well as the usual hardcore action and those galleries are definitely not going to appeal to most men.

What is appealing to both men and women is high quality content. Movies and images with good lighting, professional camerawork and sound combined with genuine plots is what appeals to both sexes. The more gonzo type porn that you're likely to find in so many places is not what appeals so much to women according to the study.

So a sponsor doesn't necessarily have to provide a separate site just for women at all; all they have to do is include better quality content in the mix for their regular sites and suddenly a site could well appeal to a whole new market.

There's also an interesting little footnote to all of this. Something else that the study found was that most pornography out there does not display the female as any sort of victim ... instead they're a willing participant and quite often initiate the sexual contact in however limited the storyline might be.

But wait, there's more. Younger women are also starting to produce their own amateur porn and aren't shy about doing it either. They're posting it on the web for everyone to see. And that raises another interesting point to consider.

On the one hand the study found that most women prefer the better produced porn but here we see that younger women are becoming very interested in amateur porn so perhaps the gonzo porn we see so much of these days could also have a growing female audience too.

So can you see some ways of improving your chances of making more sales by appealing to women? Is it possible to produce promotional material that will appeal to both sexes?

All too often we like to play safe and stick with the market that we know but in these economic times you'd be crazy to let a chance to increase your sales go by. Sure there may not be as many women openly enjoying porn as there are men but why let even one sale slip by simply because you didn't make an effort to improve the reach of your marketing?
