Shooting Your Own Content

Well there goes another weekend lost in a flurry of work ... although that was mostly done by Steve. I would have been working on client's projects too but I've got some computer problems so it's time for another format and reload. That meant that I spent a lot of time transferring files and backing up to an external hard drive.

I don't know what it is about me but I just seem to have an effect on electronic things that can get downright scary. I can't wear a digital watch because, no matter how expensive the watch is, it starts to malfunction after just a couple of hours. My laptop has been formatted and reloaded several times in the last nine months because it just stops working in the way it should.

My desktop machines are no different. The one in my office here at home began to go strange a week or so ago and it's just gone on getting worse to the point where it's pointless trying to struggle on without formatting it. That will make three times it's been formatted in the last 18 months. My old laptop had a similar history too.

Compare that to Steve's two machines that haven't been formatted in years and they still work perfectly and he now uses my old laptop and it works perfectly for him!

Oh well our computer guy is going to do that for me on Wednesday while we make another flying visit to Brisbane.

Steve just pointed out a very old thread that resurfaced on the front page of GFY this morning. It was first started back in 2003 when a webmaster here in Australia asked about the legalities of shooting content in one of the Australian states.

It was one of those all too rare GFY threads that actually looked at a sensible business issue and didn't get hijacked by sig whores. A lot of old friends posted in that thread and shared their knowledge of what the Australian laws covered adult photo shoots. It just highlighted how things can be so different depending on where you live and it's worth talking about here.

Sooner or later every new webmaster who comes into this industry gets the urge to shoot their own content. They think it might be cheaper than buying content all the time, they think it will be fun and maybe even get them a some extra pussy as well as content. And they might even think that they can sell the content and make some extra money.

There's no doubt that, with today's modern digital cameras shooting content is technically much easier than it was in the past and that's another attraction for many wannabe content shooters. If that's the way your thoughts are heading at the moment then let me tell you what I would do if I were you.

I'd go and have a very, very cold shower!

Yep if you're thinking of shooting your own content then a cold shower is very definitely something you should do right now and you should stay in the shower till all thoughts of shooting content have been washed away.

And the reason you should do that is because you're going to be opening up a legal can of worms that you probably can't afford at this point in your webmaster career. Regardless of where you live there will be laws that govern what you want to do and the laws are rarely consistent across an entire country.

In the United States there are many states where shooting hardcore content is seen as prostitution and you don't want to get caught up in that. In many states of Australia it's illegal to shoot content and if it's not illegal to shoot the content then it's illegal to sell it.

And then there's the issue of model releases, 2257 documentation and the legal problems that can arise long after the shoot has been done. Steve and I shot our own content for years and we experienced what many other content shooters experience ... the model who was happy to fuck his or her brains out for the camera at the time but who years later finds God and wants the images withdrawn.

It's easy to say that all you have to do is wave the model release in their face and tell them to go away ... but trust me, it's never that easy.

But what about all that extra pussy you can get?

Yes ... in your wet dreams. Of course some models are going to want to play but what if they change their mind next week or next year and suddenly they're telling people that they were happy to screw the male talent for the camera but were coerced into fucking the photographer as well?

And there are more problems that you have to face if you want to shoot your own content. It's not the wild times and money-saving adventure that you might think it is and it's definitely not something you should try till you have explored all the possibilities and covered your ass for every one of them.
