Enhance Your Chances with the Search Engines

Yesterday, while I was having a marketing brain doodle I mentioned that only 10 webmasters are ever going to get to the first page of any Google results page. Of course when I said that I was talking about the organic results. You can always get your site listed on the first page of any search engine results page (SERPS) if you are prepared to pay for it.

And don't think I'm talking about bribing anyone. You can always get your sites listed on the front page if you want to participate in the Google Adwords program and if you have enough money to spend you can always buy a sponsored link that will site at the very top of the SERPS.

So that means that competition for first page listings is always very intense. People spend years working out how they can achieve those top 10 listings because they know how valuable those listings can be. But that doesn't mean that small webmasters and even some newcomers to the industry can't score some of those juicy spots and today we're going to look at some of the ways you can improve your chances of getting your share of first page listings.

Choose your words carefully
Some time ago Google made the discovery that people don't always search for the same terms. In fact every day a huge number of searches are made for terms that have never been searched for before and that's what should give you some hope to go on striving for that rich vein of search engine traffic.

Instead of making it an exercise in futility by targeting words like porn, sex, and hardcore etc. target less searched for terms. Target keyword phrases instead of individual keywords. Instead of trying to crack the top spot for Milf try something like 'sexy blonde Milf' instead. Not only will that give you a chance at attracting anyone who is searching for that term but you're also going to be in the running for 'blonde Milf' as well.

So think about keyword phrases instead of individual key words and you will have a much better chance of success.

Make every page a landing page
Seth Godin suggested that every Internet marketer and webmaster should be thinking outside the box. Instead of expecting all your traffic to arrive on your index page you need to make every page of your website a landing page. To do that in the context of what we are talking about here you need to focus each page on a slightly different term.

So your index page might be focused on 'sexy blonde Milf', the next page might be targeting 'sexy hardcore Milf' and your gallery pages can be focused on other terms relevant to the Milf niche.

Sell each page to the search engines individually
If you're building free sites and you are labeling your gallery pages 'gallery1.html' and 'gallery2.html' then the knock on your front door at sunrise will be the firing squad come to take you outside and put you out of your misery. Gallery 1 and gallery 2 might have some relevance to your filing system but your filing system isn't going to make you money -search engine traffic will.

Search engines love file names that actually have some relevance so instead of calling the first gallery page 'gallery1.html' call it something that has relevance to the keywords you are targeting ... and do the same with every page you build from now on.

And when you're naming those pages don't be afraid to use names that consist of two or three words. If you do use several words then be sure to use hyphens instead of underscores. Search engines will love pages with file names like 'sexy-blonde-milf.html', they don't get so hot and horny over pages with file names like 'sexy_blonde_milf.html'.

And while your at it make sure that the title of the page and the description are not only keyword rich but also attractive to surfers who will see them in the search engines. Don't make the mistake of over-stuffing them with keywords because that's simply a sign of desperation The search engines will look at it as spam and so will any surfers who see the pages it appears on in the SERPS.

Instead, draw the surfers in with an enticing title and description and draw the search engine spiders in with carefully placed keywords and keyword phrases. When you learn how to do that half the battle will be won.

Alt tags
Don't forget these tags -they come with every image you use and you should make sure that you use the alt tags effectively. Once again, don't stuff them full of keywords and keyword phrases; by all means use your keywords and phrases in the alt tags but don't drive the search engine spiders away by using too many.

So there are some suggestions for you to think about for your next free site -and if you're a gallery builder and submit to TGPs then you can still use those same ideas on every gallery you build.

Don't be surprised to see some of your interior pages turn up in the SERPS when you implement these suggestions. Don't panic because it's not the index page, if you've built every page to be a landing page then it won't matter where the surfer comes in to your site will it?
