Social Media - Why Aren't You Using It?

Posted On: 2013-06-21

Well we're at the end of another week and this week has been good for us. While the last couple of weeks have been frustrating this week we've got through a heap of work and three very different sites have gone live.

And to top that off we've picked up a big job that will push us out of our comfort zone and that's what I always love about this business. It's all well and good to go on doing the same thing week after week until we can almost do it in our sleep but you only get better when you're being challenged and that's what this new job will do for us.

There was also some great news about Instagram today ... you can now shoot short videos and have them posted straight to Facebook and we're going to be playing with that over the weekend. Now before you dismiss the latest Instagram news as totally irrelevant for adult webmasters perhaps you need to think again.

There is nothing out there in the mainstream or in social media that's irrelevant for adult webmasters. Everything that mainstream marketers are using to promote their businesses can be used by the adult industry ... and there are adult marketers out there who are using it to promote their businesses.

You might have to dig a little to find these people who are daring to put their message out there using mainstream tools but they are there. In just the last few months I've come across a fetish video producer who is using YouTube to promote his work and that's about the last thing that you would expect to find on YouTube.

But there he is ... putting up interviews with his models. Sure they're fully clothed ... and perhaps that's a tease that just makes guys want to see even more of them ... but they discuss adult themes. The girls talk about why they want to try things like bondage ... they talk about their past experiences and the interview ends with a subtle invitation by the model to come and see what happens to them when they head down to the dungeon to watch the action.

And while we're on the subject of BDSM there's an interview with a Dominatrix in today's edition in one of the Australian national newspapers. She talks frankly about why she does what she does ... the people she deals with ... and how it has developed into a career that has become a huge part of her life.

And then there's iTunes ... yes, iTunes. You can download a weekly - I think it's weekly - podcast from iTunes that features two pornstars talking about sex .. health related issues ... and a whole lot more. The last time I looked it was very popular.

So why can't you use social media tools like Instagram to promote your business?

Perhaps you're like so many mainstream businesses that we come across who just don't get Facebook. They're looking at it as a tap that they can turn on to get instant sales and when it doesn't happen like that they dismiss it as a total waste of time. They don't stop to take a look at what it can really do for their business if they take the time to make it work for them.

If you want to make any form of social media work for your adult business then you can't rush at it like a bull at a gate ... you have to be prepared to take some time to make it work ... you have to spend some time looking at how the guys who do make money in social media make it happen.

I know of one cafe in a tourist area who is really making social media work for them. These days all they have to do is post a photo of a bowl of their soup-of-the-day and the conversation goes ballistic and from that conversation they get walk-in customers but it didn't happen overnight.

They worked very hard to get reach the point they're at now and that's the secret for adult marketers. You have to work hard to reach your potential audience and because of the industry we're in you have to be subtle ... you have to tease your potential audience just the way that fetish video maker teases his potential audience.

And you have to understand how reach out to both males and females because the girls are out there looking for some adult entertainment too. Those YouTube videos I've mentioned do that very well because when the models talk about why they want to experience some bondage they're touching on the fantasies that many women have. At the same time they're attracting the guys who want to see a sexy babe experience some pain and suffering.

So don't ignore social media ... it's there for you to use ... you just have to work out how you can use it effectively and in a way that is acceptable.
