Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks

Well that has been an interesting morning. We've been shooting a video tutorial as a little experiment just to get the feel of the whole video thing.

We're not new to video ... in fact we were shooting video for my old amateur site back in the days when a clip that was longer than a few seconds would kill your month's bandwidth allowance if too many people downloaded it and some members didn't want to download them because they took forever on their dial-up connections. But things have changed and we needed to reconnect.

Back then if you moved too much or chose to shoot the action in front of a background that had moving objects in it the file size would go through the roof and the clearer the image on the screen the bigger the file size was too.

But of course all that is ancient history. Today's video ran for over 7 minutes ... it had lots of movement (perhaps too much - he does like to wave his hands around) ... lots of colors ... and a file size that no one really seemed to care too much about.

Back when we were shooting adult video we used a video camera ... today we used an old Canon G10 and we might have even used one of our cell phones but for the fact that they don't come with a tripod mount.

Back in the hardcore days we had special lighting but today we had a lot of filtered daylight and one single overhead light and the end result was much better visually than anything we ever shot back then. Well ... showing people how to do something with a sheet of glass might not have been better than some hot anal hardcore action but you know what I mean.

The image was clearer and the video is good enough to post online straight out of the camera. My how times have changed ... everyone seems to be using video to promote their products and businesses these days ... even Mom and Pop businesses that operate out of the shed at the back of their house.

So why aren't you using video to promote your business? Of course your sponsors provide all the hardcore video that you need ... and if you're an Amateur then you're undoubtedly shooting your own hardcore video for your members ... but in lots of ways that video content really limits you in how you can promote your sponsor or yourself.

I mean you can't exactly post that hardcore stuff to YouTube now can you? And yet some people are there on YouTube promoting adult content ... adult products ... and it's all within YouTube's guidelines. Do a YouTube search for just about any current pornstar you can think of and you'll find video of them.

They might be fully clothed but they're out there promoting their movies. So why aren't you there promoting your sites and your sponsors? Why aren't you trying a little home-made softcore video to promote your sponsors?

All you need is a camera and tripod ... a microphone ... and some editing software and you can be making your own promo videos. Now before your hormones start waking up just remember ... this has to be softcore so don't think about using naked or semi-naked girls.

Think more about a promo video as an intro from you and then a voice over as the video slides through some still images. And that's just the start ... from there you can go on to bigger, better and more creative things ... you just have to make a start and be prepared to work at improving your presentation.

My partner's presentation on the video we shot this morning wasn't bad ... there is certainly room for improvement and we've already noticed some mistakes he made ... but it's still good enough to go online.

However ... if you try video and your first effort doesn't turn out so well don't give up. My partner has experience as a public speaker and yet we had to do three takes to get it right. If you've had no experience then don't be disheartened if you have to do more takes than just three ... it's worth getting it right so don't stop until you do get it right.

And once you've got a take that's worth putting on line ... do it ... publish it ... get it out there before you change your mind and want to do it again.

Once it is out there sit back and watch it several times and look at ways you can improve the next time you want to shoot some video ... because there will be a next time ... there has to be a next time if you want to keep up with your market.
