Well after a rather torrid week of dealing with lazy people ... not my staff ... my brain is about to turn to mush. So instead of diving into something deep let's just splash around in the shallows and just glance at a few different things.

Where have the tables gone? I've just finished building a large table as a template for one client who wants to do everything himself. Of course he has no coding ability whatsoever ... even very basic HTML is way too hard for him ... but he expects to be able to run his own website "because it's all so simple these days" and that makes me sad.

I'm not sad that he wants to run his own website ... except for the fact that he will always be coming back to me for help when he can't get things to work the way he wants them to. I'm sad because the bar for building your own website has been lowered over the years and now everyone thinks that they can produce the most wonderful websites on the planet.

When I first started you needed to be able to write HTML ... Microsoft's horrible Front Page was about the only HTML editor that was available back then ... but now getting something online with WordPress is just a breeze and it's becoming even easier with every new release.

But as it becomes easier for people with no coding ability it's becoming harder if you want to do basic things like add a table. And just in case you're thinking that no one needs tables these days just think of how someone with no coding skills can fit three images across a page with a lot of text for each image appearing under the relevant image.

You might be able to do it with short codes but then you have to explain short codes to someone with no coding skills and suddenly using tables makes life a lot more simple.

To pop up or not to pop up
Over on Porn Resource this week I talked about the forms of advertising we use and the need to find ways to get our traffic onto pages where we can be a little more adventurous with our advertising.

One of the things that was really making me think was pop ups ... those terrible things that our traffic sources never want to find on sites and galleries that we submit to them ... those terrible things that only annoy surfers and never do anything positive for our bottom line.

Well maybe they are annoying and there are certainly plenty of people who will tell you that the sight of a pop up sends them running for exits ... but maybe they are far more effective than what we think they are. At least that's what I'm hearing from over in mainstream.

I'm not going to go into the justification for using ... or not using ... pop ups but I do know of some very serious online marketers in mainstream who swear by them and see no good reason for not using them. These are guys who live or die by their conversions and pop ups are delivering for them.

If you want to read more about pop ups and see which ones are working for people head over to leadpages.net and have a look at some of the information you will find over there. It might change your mind about using pop ups in places where you can here in adult.

Old pages never die
Have you got some old pages in your network that are still getting plenty of traffic and maybe even generating a few sales?

If you have then maybe it's time you at least took a quick look at them ... you might be surprised at how ugly they are and how many of the sponsors that they link to are no longer worth promoting.

While I probably wouldn't waste too much time making them look pretty I would certainly do something about the sponsors you're promoting on those pages. There's nothing more unproductive than a link to a sponsor who has gone belly up since you built the page.

Leaving those pages untouched is just a waste when you could make those pages even more productive with just a few minutes worth of work and a bunch of new sponsors.

And that's it for me this week. I would like to think that I can look forward to a weekend of sun, surf, wine and other good things but there's no rest for the wicked ... at least not around here at the moment.
