URL in a Bar Code?

While not many here in online adult seem to have realized it just yet in a few years time most people will be accessing the Internet on a very regular basis via mobile computers. It could be something as simple as a cell phone or it could be something more involved such as an iPhone, PDA or something similar but whatever they use they won't be tethered to a PC.

I'm sure there will still be plenty of Internet access going on from home and business PCs but more and more people will be connecting while they're on the move. They could be a passenger in a car, a pedestrian walking down the street or a commuter waiting for a train or a bus and in some instances they could even be the driver of a car. Whatever they are they'll be able to pick up their cell phone or PDA and connect to the Net in the blink of an eye.

Now for most of us who can do that now there is one very major problem and it really is a pain in the backside. And it's all to do with one of the basics of the Internet

Late last month Steve and I drove several hours down the coast for lunch. On the way back we began to see some major storm clouds gathering on the horizon and here in Queensland those big storms can be very nasty. One moment you can be driving in good conditions and the next moment the rain comes down and you can hardly see further than the bonnet emblem on you car and at highway speeds that can really make life interesting.

So while I drove Steve pulled out my new cell phone, hooked up to the Net and tried to download the latest weather radar images for where we were. It's something that he could do with just one mouse click at home but it's different on a cell phone.

You have to type in the URL and if it's a long one - like the weather radar - it can be quite difficult. The car's moving around, big fingers have trouble with little keys and even using the stylus is a major challenge. It seems that every time you're about to hit the next key the car hits a bump and you're then looking for the back space button.

Everyone has that problem no matter where they are or what they might be doing. The silly thing is that they don't have to; the technology is already available and in use in Japan and Korea but we may never see it here in the West.

The technology is called QR Code and if you drop that term into a Google search box you will soon find all the links you need to find out more. Basically though, QR Code is nothing more than a fancy bar code that contains a URL and cell phones can be produced with an inbuilt scanner that can read the code.

You don't even have to be very close for your cell phone to read the code. The code can be on a bill board or a sign that you might be passing and once you've pointed your cell phone at the sign it reads the code and takes you to the web site.

But bill boards and signs carrying the QR Code are only the start. In Japan and Korea QR Codes are appearing on business cards, in newspapers, flyers, the backs and sides of cars and trucks and anywhere else that it might be seen.

As I said earlier, there are some who think it may never arrive in the West simply because it is so simple. With one click you're connected to the information you wanted and that is way too simple for our cell phone carriers.

The more time it takes you to get to the information that you're looking for the more money the carriers make. So do you really think that they're going to support technology that saves you money and reduces their income?

Hopefully they will because the opportunities that QR Code open up for us are very exciting and in a tourist town like the one I live in I can see endless possibilities.

It's also a reminder that, whether we like it or not, whether we think that adult online can cope with it or not, mobile access to the Internet is here and more and more people are using it. Unless you want to get left behind now is the time to start investigating all the ways you can make it work for you.

You may think that there is absolutely no way that anyone could really make adult online work with mobile access but then you could be wrong. Someone will look at the challenges and see the solutions and they will be the ones who will make money while everyone else tries to play catch-up.
