Do You Know Where to Start Your Day?

The world is conspiring against me. It obviously wants to prevent me from doing anything like work today.

Yesterday was a 19-hour day that included a drive of over 300 miles to attend a seminar on copyright as well as quite a few hours working in the office before we headed off. Six hours sleep and now I'm back in the office trying to get a start on something ... anything ... today.

Of course, all I really have to do is find another cup of coffee and set down at my desk and start working but I'm tired and there are so many interesting things to read and to look at. Instagram has just introduced a Snapchat-like feature that I would love to play with ... I can see lots of potential for that here in the adult industry.

I'm tempted to buy a new little tool that will turn web pages into e-books. I listened to a great podcast while we were driving that outlined a 4-step program to nail an effective Facebook marketing strategy and I want to try that so I can sell it to a couple of my mainstream clients.

Google isn't helping me either. Over on their webmaster blog they're talking about the latest AMP developments and there's also some chatter going on about how Google treat's sub-directories and sub-domains.

So much interesting stuff to read about and play with and I'm going to be stuck today talking to a couple of clients and trying to keep them from running off after the latest offering from the Net's version of snake oil salesmen

Are you facing a day like that? Are you facing a whole lot of options and you're not quite sure where you should start?

Earlier in the week, over on Porn Resource, I talked about how much work we get done every day and I raised the point that it's not so much the quantity of work that we get done but rather the quality of the work that we get done.

My 'to do' list the day I wrote that column had about 15 things on it and I knew that, if I got through all of those 15 things, then I would really good about what I had achieved that day. But the reality was that most of those 15 things would do nothing to put money in my bank account or move my business closer to my goals.

Sure, that list would keep me busy and being able to cross everything off that list would make me feel good but it was the really important things on that list that I should be focusing on. Instead those important things were being smothered by all the other stuff and I was fooling myself into believing that I was actually achieving things.

Obviously I have to learn to only put the really important things ... the things that will make me money or move me closer to my goals ... on that list and leave everything else off. That way I can focus on what will make me money and not on what will make me feel good.

So what should I be doing today? Unfortunately, I can't reschedule those meetings with clients so I've got to do those but I can make them shorter and get them out the door faster. Playing around with Instagram's new feature might be fun and knowing about it and how to use it may advance my business but it's something that I can put off till the weekend.

Knowing about the latest AMP developments is very important for my clients and for my future plans so that is definitely something I need to look at ... and play with ... today. AMP, for those who don't know, stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages and it's Google's latest move to take control of how we design websites. Read about it because, understand what Google is trying to do, because it is very important.

The debate about sub-directories v sub-domains for SEO is interesting but not vital. The new e-book builder is something I can put off till the weekend too but the Facebook marketing strategy is something worth looking at today.

So that builds the framework of my day ... now let's think about what you have planned for today.

What is there on your list that will put money on the table or move you closer to your goals? What have you got on your list that is important for you to know about or do but isn't quite as important as the immediate money-makers or achieving your goals? What do you have on your list that is of little importance and is going to suck up your time and take you away from the more important things?

If you're like me and a little slow to get started today ... or any day ... then prioritizing your list will not only give you a clear path to follow but it just might get you motivated to get stuck into the work you want to do.

Doing that with my list today has definitely got me interested in making a start than I was when I started writing this column.
