Why Don't People Listen?

Sometimes I'm tempted to make the move from a Windows based network to an Apple based network.

In the past that would have been a very expensive exercise because we would have had to change a lot of the software over but now a lot of the software we use is software-as-a-service the extra cost has gone but ...

Then I get another lesson what a dumb idea making the change really is. I understand Windows but Apple seems to be a totally foreign language. I've just spent an hour synching my new iPad to my PC and downloading some movies I shot and converted and now I have no idea where they are on my PC.

In the end I just had to give up and get back to doing some far more productive work. I'll make myself a coffee later and then go looking for those files again ... maybe I'll pack my lunch too.

WordPress updates
WordPress 4.4 is due for release on December 8. Oh joy ... not!

While there are always some interesting and useful things in each WordPress update there are always a lot of headaches too. People who are silly enough to set their updates to happen automatically wake up to find that their sites have turned into a pristine white page while others find that plugins that worked perfectly seconds before the upgrade now want to turn websites into garbage.

So don't schedule much for that day because you just might find that you're going to be spending most of your time sorting through a mess.

None of our personal sites are set to automatic upgrades so we'll find a site that's not doing much and then try the update when it becomes available. If everything works then we'll turn it loose on our other sites and then filter it through to sites that belong to clients who don't like automatic updates either.

So that's the downside of the looming update but what are the good things that non-developers are getting with WordPress 4.4?

Well there's a better image handler that makes loading the images onto tablets and other mobile devices happen faster. There's also some new code that allows you to use the embed tag on a line on your WordPress page, along with the link to another site's page, and you end up with that linked page embedded in your website.

While I've suggested that is a good thing I can also see plenty of people who will want to find some way of making it impossible to have their content embedded in some other person's website. I wonder how Google will view the sudden rush of embedded content that is sure to appear?

Do we listen to advice?
And how is that relevant to adult webmasters? Think about it for a moment; if you're selling porn online then you are telling people that the product you are selling is worth buying. You are giving them advice ... but do they listen?

One columnist for an online publishing website suggested recently that the only person who benefits from advice is the person who is giving that advice. While people might listen while you are giving advice the moment you close your mouth they stop listening.

If you are giving that advice online people stop thinking about what they have just read ... or heard ... the moment they close the browser window or move on to some other site. That's yet another reason why there is such a huge amount of good advice out there for people who want to succeed and yet few people are actually succeeding.

But what does it mean for webmasters who are trying to tell people that their sponsor has the best porn in the universe? I'm not sure because I'm still trying to come to grips with the idea that I have been talking here for years and no one has been listening to me.

That thought is rather ego deflating but it raised another thought in my mind. If people don't really listen to all that good advice then why and how do the radio and TV shock jocks have such a following from people who obviously do listen to what they are saying?

Is there something in the way they are presenting their message that is different to all the others out there who want to give good advice? Why does their message resonate so much with people while our message seems to fall flat on its face?

Now there is something for you to think about this weekend.
