Words Make a Difference 2

Last week I started talking about words and how important they are if you want to make sales. Yes ... even in the world of hardcore porn words are just as important as the images we show our potential buyers.

While a picture may be worth a thousand words images can't set a scene all by themselves. You need words too if you want to really take your surfers by the gonads and lead them to where they're going to make a purchase and put money in your pocket. But what are the important words? What words should you use to ensure that you have the most chance of making a sale?

Well you might think that it's the last words a surfer might read on your website that are the important words but if that's what you think then you're wrong. It's not the last words on your website that will engage a surfer and encourage them to head over to your sponsor and sign up ... it's the first words that count.

Surprised? You shouldn't be because when you think about it the importance of those first words becomes obvious. Those first words on your website are the ones that will set the scene for the surfer as they arrive on your site and in a world of fantasies ... and that's exactly what hardcore porn is ... it's those first words that set the scene for those fantasies and really encourage the visitors to your site to slip into the fantasy that you're offering them.

The first words are also important because they will encourage a visitor to your site to read all the other words that you've got on your site. If those first words that the visitor to your site sees resonate with him or her and help them get into the fantasy that your site is weaving then they will go on reading what you have written.

If your words don't resonate with your site visitor then all they will go on looking at is those hardcore images you have on your site but images don't tell a site visitor to head over to your sponsor and sign up for more hardcore action.

So your first words are very important but where do you put your first words? Well in copywriting those first words are what is known as the headline and there is only one place to put a headline isn't there? Yep if it's a headline then it goes right at the top of the web page where people will expect to see it.

There's something else that's important about those first words ... or headline ... too. They need to be brief and it's long been known that the most effective headlines are between 7 and 11 words in length.

Now 7 to 11 words for a headline may sound like plenty of words but you try writing a headline that's 7 to 11 words long and is engaging and also sets the scene for the fantasy you want to weave and you'll soon discover that it's quite hard to restrict a headline to such a limited number of words.

But don't give up trying to do just that because it can be done. Write a draft of your headline without worrying too much about how many words are in it. Then go back and edit it ... cut out words that are just padding ... cut out words that don't focus on the fantasy you want to weave ... and make sure that you have words in there that make the headline totally relevant to the person who is reading it and you will have a headline that works.

Last Thursday I talked about focusing on the person who was visiting your site and not on your sponsor ... or even on yourself ... because you will make more sales when you make your sales pitch relevant to the person you're trying to sell to.

Your headline ... your first words ... need to include words put the focus of the site right on the person who is visiting the site. Does that sound like an impossible task? Well there's a very simple three-letter word that will do that quite effectively.

There are other words that you can use that will put the focus of the headline on the person who is reading it but when you're just starting out there is absolutely nothing wrong with using the word ‘you' to focus your headline. When someone reads that word they know that they are being spoken to and what they're about to read may have some relevance to them ... so they read more.

There's still more to be said about words and I'll be back on Thursday with some more thoughts about them.
