Many times you will see threads on various forums asking if your parents, spouse, etc. knows what you do for a living. A surprising number of people do answer that nobody in their lives outside the adult industry knows what they do for a living. This is rather surprising considering the sheer amount of money that some people make and that nobody actually questions or investigates where that money is coming from. This is not to say that the webmasters do not have other mainstream sources of income but most spouses would probably notice where payroll checks came from or wonder why their bank account balances fluctuate repeatedly with no steady stream of income.

There are many ways to approach how to reveal to or prevent others from knowing what you’re doing for a living. The reveal part can be a bit touchy but if handled delicately and even visually demonstrated most will get the picture with little problem. One of the best ways to handle revealing that you are in the adult industry is to describe exactly what it is you do. One example would be someone who runs a TGP or builds galleries for a living. You simply would inform the interested party that you “advertise” adult paysites and when a consenting adult signs up through one of your advertisements you get paid a commission. You also might mention that everything you advertise is a legal adult site that only features other consenting adults and that age verification laws are strictly enforced. I have found that this explanation typically works very well and doesn’t invite a lot of additional questions about it. You’ve revealed that you work in adult and minimized any concerns they should have that you are doing anything illegal. Legality seems to be one of the largest fears for those outside the adult industry. There is a misconception that porn is illegal and thus if you are advertising it you must be doing something illegal as well. Morality is also a big hang up for some. This is a more delicate issue and only you will know how to best approach it with someone that is curious or concerned.

To keep this information from those that you do not wish to find out is a bit more difficult at times. Keeping the information private may be out of protection to those around you but also out of shame for some. Most if not all of the adult webmasters wish to protect their families from any embarrassment or harassment from the general public knowing what they do for a living. There are ways to keep your name from ever being connected to the adult industry but you have to be diligent in covering your tracks. One key thing you can do is to ensure that all domains that you own and operate are registered as private. Do not use your real name at any time on websites, message boards or any other web-based correspondence. This is because it can and will end up in the search engines. At this point all one has to do is search for your name and all relevant information can be accessed. If you are hiding your true profession because you are ashamed that your family or friends will not approve you should evaluate what harm would come to you should they ever find out. It is not easy to hide your activities permanently and you should be prepared that some day someone you love will find out and it could radically change your life. Honesty is always the best approach but if you cannot be honest about what you do for a living be certain to keep your tracks well covered.

The most important people in your lives that you want to protect are your children. Ignorance and intolerance is rampant in our society and you do not want any undue hardship placed on your children or even your parents due to your chosen profession. It is possible to maintain a separate work environment from your home environment and if you take your work home make sure that your children and/or family is not exposed to it. Although adult webmasters do not do anything illegal, society is harsh and a bit of privacy is to be expected and is deserved. From the beginning try to maintain your privacy as much as possible because even though you may not have a family now you may one day in the future and everything you say and do in life can come back to haunt you at one time or another.
