You've Never Really Arrived

There's a saying that seems to be popular in many western countries that goes something like this: just when you think you've reached your goal someone goes and moves the posts.

The longer I live the more I come to realize that saying pretty much sums up life in general. We all have goals ... things we want to achieve ... levels we want to reach and every time we reach those goals, achieve those things and attain the levels we've been aiming for there's always something else ... something better ... just ahead of us.

I guess if you're younger you probably haven't encountered that situation yet ... you're still striving to achieve the first set of goals that you have set and you're yet to achieve any of them. If that's you then you may well think that your immediate goals are all there is and once you've reached them you can sit back and enjoy the benefits that will come to you because of all that hard work.

And if that's what you're thinking then that's unfortunate because instead of thinking that you'll be able to retire once you've reached your goals what you should be doing is laying the groundwork now for what you will move on to once those immediate goals are reached.

For example instead of thinking that you will be able to sit back and do nothing once you've built a link list up to 20 or 30 thousand uniques a month what you should be thinking about is how to generate even more traffic and turn it towards your own sales funnels instead of passing it out to all those free sites and galleries.

Instead of thinking that all you need to do is build up a network of teen free sites that all point to your sponsors' paysites perhaps what you should be thinking about is building your own teen paysite to take advantage of those free sites you're building. From there perhaps you should be thinking of producing your own unique content and move on from there to offering your unique content to site members in ways that are different to the paysite model that we're so familiar with.

From there ... well there is basically no limit to where you can expand your business.

Some years back a guy we know started a mainstream blog that dealt with a reasonably technical subject that interests lots of people. He produced all the content ... did all the promotion work ... chased all the traffic and it was very successful. He could have sat back at that point and just let the money roll in ... many bloggers would have done just that.

Instead of sitting back at that point and thinking that he had arrived he used the framework that he had already built as a springboard. He managed to get a little venture capital and employed a small number of journalists to work for him.

At first the people he employed were freelancers but before long he had full-time journalists working for him in branch offices in three major state capitals here in Australia. His traffic numbers climbed through the roof and major manufacturers were beating a path to his door to buy advertising spots.

But even that wasn't enough for him and last year he bought an already established sales site that offered people space to sell specific items. He obviously fed traffic both ways and his business grew some more. Earlier this year he opened his very own video channel and his business has grown some more.

He currently controls more traffic in a month that many mainstream sites see in a year and he's directly competing with some major media companies ... and winning.

It's fairly obvious that he never let himself be fooled into thinking that there was ever going to be a point in his life where he had arrived. Instead of arriving all he sees are stepping stones to something else ... something bigger ... something more challenging ... something more interesting ... and something more financially rewarding.

So don't ever think that you have arrived. Your first free site or first gallery is just a stepping stone to your next free site or gallery ... your hundredth free site or gallery is just a stepping stone to a link list that will help you generate your own traffic.

Generating and controlling your own traffic is just a stepping stone to the next level and that's the way it should go on till you're ready to retire and do no more work. Until you reach that point where you're ready to retire, anytime you think you've arrived could be the point where you've begun to fail and no one wants to fail ... do they?
